Master Level 9 ML 9 was a big-time interesting encounter series. First of all, you adventured on a series of floating islands in the sky, which was cool. Secondly, the big boss at the end was the Phoenix, and you had to knock out 3 power generating stations before even trying to tackle the huge deadly bird. This one was memorable. I remember the raid having to come back to finish off Phoenix more than once.

^ That. That right there drove me nuts. You just couldn't take Kul anywhere. He'd bring giant tornadoes to wipe your raid, or be toasted by a big chicken. This ML was fairly easy until you got to the boss. I used to farm several of the encounters just for drops. The boss, you really did need a zerg to defeat. You had to place three groups of specifically designed groups at three generators to keep a giant statue from turning it back on (after you broke it) in order to be to even hurt the Phoenix, let alone kill it. This encounter was a pain to coordinate. Later on, they totally got rid of the statues that turned the generators back on and you only needed to knock them all out and then kill the Phoenix. I still can't decide which was worse, the ML9 boss or the ML8 one. Such a pain either way.

Master Level 10 ML 10 was the big finish to the series of raids. It was unique in the sense that this raid was a random event that could materialize anywhere- try scheduling for that one! What would happen is that a glowing portal to a platform in space (!) would open up for a certain amount of time. Assuming it was found, a raid would travel to the portal, go through, and then fight to defeat the 12 creatures of the zodiac. This was a great and exotic encounter. The portalHere's some Far Journeys members!A rupture in the space-time continuumCheck out those illustrious group members! And Nurgh was the raid leaderThe last battle approachesDraco, the final boss of bossesProof that I've always been a screenshot nut! By the way, Flidhais is Ariesel, and I'm pretty sure I see Grigorian in these picturesAfter the battle- rolling for some amazing lootAmazed that it's all over When you had successfully completed all 10 of the Master Level raids, you went back to a place in Atlantis and trained your last ML ability- there were 2 tracks for each class, and the abilities were quite useful. My Warden completed the Battlemaster track, which he used to bolster his class's rather weak combat abilities. The other track was more of a support track, but it had great abilities such as access to power, healing and anti-stealth fonts. Overall, I liked the Master Level series- this was the most raiding I've ever done in my MMO career. Back when the MLs first came out with the Trials of Atlantis expansion it was a challenge to do them all. They watered them down later, but I remember being very proud of accomplishing the whole encounter series on my Warden. A couple criticisms of the ML series could be made- PvPers didn't like doing so much PvE, and they really needed to since the ML abilities were substantial. The other criticism could be made of the whole ToA expansion- it fragmented the DAoC community in the sense that instead of going out and PvEing or PvPing, there were a hundred ML steps to do, which meant lots of small groups of people needed to do very different things. Before ToA the sense of community was stronger because everyone did a few basic broad things. With the advent of ToA, everyone was doing a particular step of a particular ML or they needed a specific scroll or a specific artifact drop, so people had a lot of things to do that others may not want to do. Overall though, I enjoyed the significant challenge of the ML series (even though they truly were a trial at times). It's doubtful that we'll see such challenging content in contemporary MMOs.

When I lead the ML raids, I would always pots on the VN forums that way I could get more people. When scheduling them with just my guild or alliance, I seemed to have a low turnout. So low that some encounters just couldn't be done. Posting on the VN forums allowed me to get quite the zerg together and do most any encounter rather easily.
The thing about ML10 though, is that it was one zone, for all realms. So PvP battles could potentially occur there. Someone criticized me once for posting about my ML10 raid on an open forum, where members of the other realms could see.
In one particular series, Midgard announced they would be there waiting on us when we arrived, and would take out spoils. They showed up with quite the sizable force, but our numbers overwhelmed them and we prevailed. I think a group's worth of Albs showed up thirty minutes later. They were quickly dispatched. That turned out to be a very fun "PvE" encounter. ;D
