I just don't think the males and females even look like the same race. Its like having the males be Danny Devito and the Women being Elisha Cuthbert.
A Rift comment about the male character options.

You know, a MMO can be as great as you want, but when you re-roll, and you see 100% the same quests, the same content, something in planning of the game went terribly wrong if you ask me. Re-rolling new chars is one of the main drive for gamers to stick to a game, and offering them no alternative content, no different zones, no other quests, you lost a HUGE chance for lasting appeal. It's kind of a no brainer, one would think, but in fact, a ton of companies just don't realize the importance of this feature. Namley in ALL MMOs from Cryptic. Or DCU. Or Rift. The game encourages this by rewarding those attacking quest hubs and wardstones.Thread: Rift catching that perfect storm?Rift is going to catch the big wave, as people's time cards from WoW expire, their subs run out, and the casuals become disenchanted with DCUO. Please let me pay you and let me level substantially slower. I don't really see why a game developer would want to do this, and I have two reasons why I say this. Number one is if reaching the level cap is a problem for you, then spend more time reading the quests and do all of the quests. Go to all of the town and pick up everything. Do everything you find and take up some crafting too. It would take you significantly more time to level up if you played like this. I know from experience. I did every quest available to me in WoW up to level 60. I did many, many gray quests. The second reason is the end game. MMOs have an endgame for after a player has reached the max level. I sort of want to say yes to this question, although I think without casual players, a game would die more quickly.

Consider this scenario: your Main-Character takes mining, foraging, and butchery (covering the three gathering professions); Mr. Alt1 takes Apothecary, Armoursmithing; and Artificing and Mrs. Alt2 takes Outfitting, Runecrafting, and Weaponsmithing (covering all the crafting professions). Why wouldn't I? Well, maybe because I don't have unlimited time and with the time I do have I'd rather not stand around the loom knitting socks with some alt.

Thread: First kisses and beta testing: a reality checkWe've all been there, at least most of us have. Your life goes on pretty much the same everyday and you're happy... maybe not "jump for joy" happy, but happy enough... contented. Life is ok or at least ok enough. Then something key changes, there's that cute guy (or girl if that's your taste) that you haven't seen before. It's their first day at work/school/whatever and they are dressed in their best and using all the right manners and smiles. They can't help but catch your eye and you smile a little kinda shy and they flash you back the most congenial and inviting smile full of sincerity and white teeth. Their eyes seem to sparkle and you try not to make blatant direct eye contact but they draw you in. You unconsciously brush your hair back, typical nervous gesture and turn away. Wow he (she/whatever) was cute, but time to get back to life. You turn around again and they aren't across the room anymore, they are right there and it's obvious they want you. They put their best foot forward saying and doing all the right things...Thread: This is what AAA means....nicely done TrionI cannot recall any game going to released as polished as Rift appears to be.
This is what being a AAA title means, and why I am more than willing to pay AAA prices.Thread: PvP/PvE Activity OverlapHi, everyone.
One of the things that got a lot of testing during the most recent beta was the amount of PvP and PvE overlap that people would be experiencing on both PvP and PvE servers. If you played through Scarlet Gorge, you know that's a great place to see how social dynamics play out.
We like the idea of PvE people being able to progress as they expect, and we also like the idea of PvP objectives for those who choose to take part.
Fortunately, both of those activities have a place in Rift.
For PvE content: We'll be implementing some changes to PvE quest areas to lower the likelihood of griefing via blocking the opposing side's PvE progression.
• Wardstones in Quest Camps aren't supposed to be attackable targets, or provide rewards for defeating them. The rewards on those were a bug that's been addressed. Those are part of the PvE land control game of rifts and invasions.
• Guard AI behavior was a little less smart than it should have been. We're improving it such that guards behave much more like an NPC bearing that name would be expected to.
• Guards in PvE areas will prove to be considerably more challenging vs. player targets. They still provide a similar challenge to PvE invasions, but now will be much harder in PvP. We'll be tuning this over time. Expect to see some first balance out during the next beta.
• The Porticulum Masters in particular have enlisted the help of the Portal Defense Force. When they're attacked in PvP, you can expect them to put out a call for help over the planar Porticulum network.
For PvP gameplay:
• Expect additional PvP takeover areas across Telara. There are differently-themed, cool-looking wardstones clearly displayed as PvP targets, down to the faction inscriptions on the side. You can see examples of these PvP objectives in Scarlet Gorge.
• To help out with the spawn camping that was occurring in the shared world, Peace of the Grave (the buff granted when choosing to respawn in a graveyard) will now protect you from PvP attacks for 30 seconds, or until you take your first offensive action.
We do enjoy being able to provide gameplay for people who are fans of both types of activities.
At the places where those interests cross over into griefing in one direction or the other, please do expect us to continue tuning to ensure that the griefing potential is kept to a minimum.
- The RIFT Development Team Thread: Character Models - A HUGE ConcernWhen I go to create my characters, the only thing that really stood out (if you were to look at my char from another person's viewpoint) is the hair type and hair color. All the other options are kind of of useless, in that they are so minute that they make everyone look the same. For example, eye color, lip color and makeup are too subtle to be seen from a distant. The slider for the different facial features showed extremely subtle differences between the faces. I can barely tell the difference and I'm staring at the models up close and straight on. I also tried sliding the scale all the way to the far right, middle, and far left in many combinations; and somehow my characters still end up looking the same. Height - who cares when all the defiants are about the same height. So what's left? Hair style and hair color. Even then, all the hair styles are very similar from one race to another. Same style pigtails, I mean, really?!! So the only difference I can really notice is the hair color. This is very sad! It results in your character looking neither diverse or unique. Thread: On The Fence? Read thisThis is truly a living, breathing world with random dynamic events that change the landscape and culture of the environment in which we play. I feel that is exactly what Trion was aiming for and so far it's an amazing job and an amazing experience. I logged out once in a quest hub by the wardstone only to log in and notice that everything was really "Green" and a "Life" invasion was kickin' my face in. Good fun, good fun. You have to see the comedy in that. Also as annoying as is it may seem riding through Freemarch on your mount to only get hit and knocked off by a low level mob that you can one shot doesn't change the fact that if the American Army rolls through a "hostile" area, the locals will still throw rocks at our tanks. Granted, i know a rock won't prohibit the further advancement of the tank, however a rock/boulder might just realistically knock you off a horse/ fantasy creature type mount. I know it seems annoying but in my opinion that's all part of a living and breathing world...Thread: Roles - the only bad idea in Rift?Does nobody else think this concept waters down characters too much? Surely it removes the feeling of your character being YOUR character and pride in how you built it up and specced it etc.... I mean, if you can be an AOE two-handed DPS'er through an instance, and then switch to a heavy tank role just before you reach the boss, and then flick to an anti-magic character afterwards - it just feels to me like it's removed a lot of that "personalisation" from building your character, and basically waters players down to just the 4 main classes (mage, cleric, warrior, rogue) since anyone can be anything within them, and then your only real difference to any other player end game is going to be which of the 4 main classes you are - rather than someone being called on for their crowd-controlling skills, and someone else for their pure DPS etc.Thread: Raids will no longer have 10-man versionsJust listened to the pod cast. Went in looking to find out information on what differences there were between 10 and 20 man raids; only to discover they are removing the 10 man versions. For 10-man guilds to see all of the content, they would have to pug or run with another guild. I pre-ordered the game under the pretense that my small guild would have access to all of the content with guild only runs.
I am disappointed to say the least, but I will keep an eye on the game. If their stance ever changes then we will pick up a copy.Thread: Secrets For Playing Rift WellShare your tips here. Found something special that is easily missed? Post it here!
One thing I noticed is that if you want to upgrade your Unstable Source Core to hold more planar essences, you go to the dude in Meridian in the back of the crafting area (the Manufactory) and he sells them there for planarite. If you are not a crafter, he is easy to miss. Also, he sells abilities for upgrading wardstones, etc. Unfortunately they look like items, but they are actual skills that you keep forever. Thread: [TRION] Things to Watch Out in Medium/Long Term – 8 Points1. The Problem: The End Game vs. Leveling Content.
The Detail: Your customer base will be divided – Should you cater for the needs of the powergamer guilds who view the game in an e-sports perspective where there has to be a constant end-game challenge to be overcome; or should you focus on the ride along the way and ensure the casual gamer has enough things to do until he gets to the end-game content and enjoys rolling alts?
Current Approach: Current beta version provides the casual player plenty of ways to spend their time in the game and get rewarded for it: The crafting is there (with its minor annoyances and shortcomings, that can be fixed in the medium/long term), the landscape, artifacts and lore elements are out there for the explorer, and the Rifts give a perfect break to the grind of the quests in a rewarding and fun manner. We do not have sufficient information on how the end game will look like, but from the pod-casts it’s clear to see that the developers focus will be a raid-oriented approach.
The suggestion: Do not forget the 1-50 experience in the medium/long term. This is especially true for the power of items: In the name of pleasing the “race to the end-game” crowd, please do not introduce powerful items like heirlooms or rare dungeon rewards that will make a lvl 20 solo an elite lvl 23. Remember, if its too easy, its boring. In the long term, if a new player decides to try your game, make his experience the same as it was when %90 of your player base leveled. In your updates and changes in future, ensure that leveling is not a means to an end, but an end in itself.Thread: Grouping Concerns in class designBased on these numbers and the current class designs, to me, it seems obvious we'll probably see the following emerge as the prescribed raid grouping: * I tend to predict both tanks will have Warrior tanks. The main reason behind this is the fact that, through multiple tank souls, they can stack a ton of mitigation and tank utility. Looking at both the the Cleric and Rogue tank trees, they just don't come close enough to touching Warriors to be considered for one of the precious two tank slots. * I tend to predict that your main raid healers will be clerics, once again, largely because they multiple souls that synergize well for the task at hand. * I tend to predict each raid group will probably want a 1 Bard and 1 Chloromancer almost entirely to help bad healing. I think its very possible, the raid might want only one or the other and certainly not both, once again, for the main reason that they don't have souls that will synergize their role well.

forums.riftgame.com/showthread.php?61579-Post-Beta-6-On-Rifts-Raids-PvP-and-Damage%E2%80%A6Post Beta 6 info Just before Beta 6, we made an anti griefing change that prevented enemy wardstones at hubs and towns from being destroyed by the opposing faction, and significantly boosted guard strength around PvE hubs. We’re pretty happy with how that worked out on the PvE servers.
In time for Open Beta, we’ve developed the ability to repeal those changes on the PvP servers only, to see if they can remain playable without it. Ideally, it’s our hope that there’s gameplay value in having people being able to band together to attack and defend those areas on PvP servers.
If you choose to play on a PvP server, it’s our assumption that you not only don’t mind that level of interruption from that PvP attack-and-defense style of gameplay, but are actively excited about taking part in it. If you want uninterrupted PvE questing, choosing a PvE server is definitely recommended.NPC Damage: Beta 6 was the largest test we’ve ever done. We had the largest number of people across more level ranges than ever before playing Rift. As we’re fine tuning NPC damage for launch, we got a lot of feedback (and just as importantly, combat metrics from the servers) on how everyone is performing in different level ranges. Expect further updates to these in Open Beta.

Thread: RIFT is too fast, cut exp gains in half.I don't think we spend enough time in each level learning our abilities, exploring the world, gathering mats for crafting, World PVPing, chatting it up with homies, and engaging in other shenanigans because we level up too fast and the NPC mobs are too easy.
I think they make the game a little harder and drop EXP gains across the board. Discuss.Thread: The 36th rootIts not a lame math equation, just an end game damage multiplier for clerics.
A 51 spec shaman will do 50% more damage with the same skills than a 35 spec shaman.
A 51 spec Inquisitor will do 35% more damage with the same skills than a 35 spec Inquis.
Trolls discuss~ Thread: Ultimate Rift Macro GuideHello guys,
This will be a brief but hopefully somewhat informative guide to Macros in RIFT. Also listed are basic commands and emotes you might use in these macros. This list will not be a complete, but a ongoing project, to hopefully make one comprehensive macro guide. If you have any other Macros you would like to share, please post them and I will add them with credit to your name at some point, Thanks.Useful! Thread: Dungeon Finders are comingJust FYI, article on ZAM.com
And yes they will be cross-shard.
“About half” of Rift's content is found in dungeons and warfronts, Scott said. To this end, he stated that a dungeon queue system is just a matter of time. It will be cross-shard to reduce wait times. Although the idea seems to be unpopular (especially among the hardcore fansite representatives), Scott said that an auto-forming group finder is almost a necessity. “People love grouping, but hate to put a group together,” he said, noting that without an auto-group function, “we won't get people in there.” He reiterated their design philosophy when asked about this killing off socializing at higher levels; if it's a problem several months down the line, they'll deal with it. But as far as launch goes, a grouping tool will be necessary.Thread: Tell me Im not going to be able to have Guardian and Defiant chars ON THE SAME SERVERPeople will exploit, there's a reason that isn't allowed in other RvR games. Back in DAoC this was forbidden to discourage 'cross-realming' for exploit purposes. I'm surprised Rift is allowing this. Thread: Beta 7: Patch Notes 2/14/11Beta 7 2/14/2011 - The 'Be My Valentine' Edition!Thread: Roles Trivialize the Soul SystemSpecifically having so many of them. For instance, as a Mage I dislike the idea of being able to swap between Healer, then AoE, then Single Target, and then Leveling all at the click of a button depending on the scenario.
It means I don't have to make decisions w/ my build. I'm never giving up anything, I don't have to sacrifice x for y. It completely sucks the fun out of having this incredibly robust class system.
All Mages will be the same. All Rogues will be the same. All Warriors will be the same. All Clerics will be the same. It's just a matter of clicking a button, and you can tailor your build to handle almost any scenario w/out making a single sacrifice.
I could understand maybe having 2, specifically for PvP. But any more than that is just really taking the fun out of the system. Later comment: My point is, "not using" roles will not be an option, it's a waaaaayyy too powerful feature to ignore and groups will expect every rogue to have a support role, an offtank role and a DPS role which he can freely switch between. You will lose control over the playstyle you want to play and you will be forced into the playstyle the group needs.
Roles do not lead to flexibility, quite the opposite.I think this is a valid criticism. Thread: Important Announcement on Forum PostingHey, All-
As you have no doubt noticed, our community has been growing and we are working hard to keep up with all of you! We are striving to make this forum a friendly and productive place for discussions about RIFT.
We had already told you a while back that we would be making a change requiring that you have an active game account to be able to post on the forums once the game is live. But given the amount of traffic we have been getting and the time it is taking us to deal with posts by users who are clearly not here to become part of the community, we have decided to take some action ahead of time.
As of today, you will need to have a pre-order of RIFT to be able to post on the public forums. Anyone can access and read them. But in order to post, your account must show that you have pre-ordered the game. If you have a pre-order and find you are unable to post, log out and back in again and it should take care of the problem for you.
The Beta forum will still be open during the beta event. Since this is an open beta, that forum is now public and you will be able to read and post in it if you have a valid Trion account.
We appreciate your patience as we make changes and get things ready for launch! Yeah, the forums have gotten pretty rough.

Wow, 60 pages on Rift XP. I'd say the early levels do go by fairly quickly and I'm sure if you're playing 8 hours a day it might seem too fast but once I go in the 20s it seemed to slow down to a nice rate.
I do agree that if you try to quest, PvP and Rift you'll start to out level the rewards. However I don't think you want to have to do all of that just to level up....like someone said, "this isn't Aion"
