I love rift and have been following it for quite a while. I am however quite disappointed with how the races look. I don't know if there is not enough variation in the customization of these races or if some of them are just plain overall ugly in looks. I understand what this dude is talking about, but I disagree. Rift is probably the first game to make characters look "real." The characters look like they could be real people. They have natural curves and weight to them. They aren't some super-skinny model with giant breasts, or Schwarzenegger-glory days wannabe. So, I've been playing Beta 3, not very high in level yet (just hit 10) but from what I've seen so far, this is a good WoW-clone. I mean, some things are blatant. The trade window is almost a copy/paste. Interacting with in-game objects (loot, quest objects, etc) is also a good copy. I'm all for borrowing things from other MMOs and "if it ain't broke, don't fix it", but can't we at least make this things LOOK different? But when all is said and done, I'll be subscribing to Rift, because I liked WoW and it reminds me heavily of WoW, and I'm just craving something new (and I want to play with friends again). I'm getting tired of hearing this comment. People see that Rift (or any new MMO) has a class that uses a bow and automatically says they took it from WoW. Sure, there are some WoW elements to Rift, but quickbars existed before WoW. So did skill trees, trade windows, mini-maps, health/mana/endurance bars, on-screen damage indicators, and a butt-load of other things. WoW wasn't the inventor of all of these things you think they were. They took ideas that worked from games before them and added/improved upon them, the same as games after WoW took elements of WoW (and games before it) and added/improved upon them.

Actually, that would make the basis of a good essay, Rego. Sometimes I think people compare games to WoW because that may be the only MMO they've ever played. Statistically, I'm sure there are millions of people who've not played any other MMO. Not that that excuses it!

Thread: Classes are all the same. The game looks great so far but I have one huge concern. Its that there isn't enough differentiation from the sub classes. They all pretty much play the same but with different talents.Thread: 66 points is not enough!okay if i wanna max out a root system that is 51 points which must be done to be good in pvp. So that leaves me with 16 points to put into a second tree, whats the point of having a third tree.....? Thread: PC Gamer Feb 2011 Discusses Rift PvP!Very short one-page article on Rift in the Feb 2011 issue of PC Gamer (just arrived at my door today). Here are some key snippets:Thread: Character Customization And YOUUpon seeing trailers, and gameplay videos,as well as experiencing the game through beta time it has been made clear that characters are very well customizational through classes and souls. Though,as far as i seen (which may not be all too true in the future) Everyone was running around in the same few sets of quested clothing/armor which offered no individuality.Thread: Altitis and RiftI feel that my horrible Altitis and Rift go together pretty well, with the Soul Attunement and all that. Altitis is the constant urge to make more characters, generally to try everything out though it can get in the way of the fun. Looks to me like you won't need to play more than 4 characters- covering the 4 archetypes- because you can try all sorts of blends of souls within each. Thread: 3rd CBT is over , what you think of Rift so far ?Overall, I like the game. It has potential. A few things I would change is lower the amount of quests. They are all mostly the same anyway: go talk to this guy, kill 12 of those guys, click on 5 of these things. I may be alone when I say this but the sheer amount of quests and their sameness makes me completely disregard the lore associated with them.Thread: Some thoughts about beta 3 and releaseWhat really bothers me though (and its a crime every other mmorg out there is guilty of these days) is the insane ease of leveling.Thread: Compiled Mage Trees - Informational only!A nice look at Mage souls and abilities. Thread: Ok thats it. I'm rallying a campaing: The turtle needs to go.OK that hideous thing belongs DEEP underwater. Murky waters one can hope.
I for one do not want to see this thing being rided by a raid of people across Telara.
Please TRION consider switching it to an aplha wolf or something from the starting areas..
Or my days of taking you seriously are certainly coming to a middle.
Thank you.I hate it too! Thread: Itemisation, the turtle mount, and who am I again?Vesavius wrote: Right now I am feeling badly let down by the tragic lack of itemisation and appearence slots… not only do I look the same as other defiant mages, I look the same as GUARDIAN mages. Even in Aion they managed to let elyos look different to the asmos right? Just seems really LAZY right now. Where is all the defiant steam punk styled gear? Where is all the Guards rightous heraldry?? I hope they have more to throw in.
Trion have a great core system here, they have nice maps, now they need to populate it with life to make it feel like a world and not the film set I mentioned. This is a very good criticism IMHO.

Looks to me like you won't need to play more than 4 characters- covering the 4 archetypes- because you can try all sorts of blends of souls within each. Also note that Defiant and Guardians have the exact same classes. So unless you are craving to play in the other environment or as a different race, there is no reason to play the other faction. I like, and dislike, this. To be honest, I still love DAoC's way of doing things. They had nearly twenty races, over fifty classes, and three factions. Now that's diversity! I would have to agree here. I'm really loving the game so far, but I would like for a bit more customization there (they did an excellent job of character creation, and with the dyes).

Thread: MMORPG's - Psychology. ("Why such a big deal?")As many have come to understand, Rift is a game that follows traditional MMORPG styles and mechanics. The game is in summary, a world built around all the things in a vast amount of MMO's that have worked successfully. Things like Public Quests, or even down to the very User-Interface. Perhaps a Combo-Point Rogue, or even Quest-Based Progression. These aren't new idea's, but it seems as if in this current era, it's now a bad thing. Where was all the complaining before? Is Rift such an evil game, for using the pillars of the genre from time as its foundation?Thread: Why Rift is the first real "answer" to World of WarcraftIn case you missed it, Rift laid the gauntlet down yesterday and openly challenged World of Warcraft. While no one has at Trion has openly claimed it will be a WoW Killer, making “we're not in Azeroth anymore” as the tagline for your commercial is about the same as flipping Blizzard the bird. Definitely ballsy considering how well every other “WoW Killer” has done.
See, that's the thing, though. I don't think any other game really even came close to challenging WoW. Every single one missed some vital part of the equation that left players to pull up their 30-day roots.Thread: The no grace period thing.I got to say, Trion is kind of pushing abit hard to get people to get the digital copy. Pretty much on the 1st, if you are a 2nd shift worker in the states and get home after midnight, log on, you will get a message saying tough luck. You wait till 10am to go pick up your copy, or delivery from ups/fedex.
Thats doable of course. I am just saying Trion is making going retail potentially a hassle.
Oh well, screw you local brick and mortar stores! This is an issue. I canceled my box order and bought a digital collector's edition from Steam partly due to this. Thread: No grace period a big mistake, please rethink this trionHaving no grace period for people to get their physical box is a big mistake. I ordered from amazon and the free shipping (what I can afford after paying 80 bux for game and planning on going the 6 month sub) takes 7 to 10 business days. So you are telling me I have to pay extra for same day shipping (on average another 20 to 30 bux) in order to play after release day.
Actually you are telling me and everyone else either do digital download or pay for same day shipping. Not cool.
You guys have done a lot of cool things and have responded to customer concerns in every way so far. I am really hoping you respond to this concern as well.
You should provide a standard grace period. Take a look at other games that allowed grace periods and in some cases extended those grace periods due to partners not getting games shipped in a timely manner.
Please dont force us to forgo box sets or force us into paying even more money for same day shipping. This really is not a viable option in my mind. Thread: Why are the masses afraid of PvP?I have been dying for a game to get smart and combine WoW and Warhammer.. PvP, I noticed, is what most people are afraid of for some reason. PvE is PvE and if you want to kill PC mobs all day why not stay with WoW..or play a single player game? I am not looking for a fight, I am just curious why people cry about PvP and beg for PvE to be "the main focus"... Why can't we have both?Thread: Dual TargetingI'm not sure how much about the UI those of you who haven't gotten to play know yet, but one of the major issues is the lack of a Dual Targeting system, for me.
Currently, this game uses the traditional target, target of target, and "focus" target system. This is an old system, and outdated.I personally believe a dual-target system provides much larger benefits in the grand scheme of things than the previous one. Whether that's just making you be more engaged (seriously, having to choose your own targets is a step above having the game do it for you with target of target. Pro-active is more entertaining, rather than being reactive.), or being more functional in allowing you to keep a target (friendly or enemy) while changing the other.
Now, if you're familiar with the old system, and would like to keep it, you know what, that's fine. However, those of us who have experienced a dual-target UI, and game, simply can not return to not having access to it. At least, I can't.

Thread: What has brought so many Vanguard players here?I see a lot of people from Vanguard here. And a lot of talk about Vanguard. I like to see that as thats where I'm from, but why? Is there something I missed? Some VG dev working on this or something? Thread: The FEMALE CHARACTERS in this game are BEAUTIFUL... realistically speaking...One of the many things that I appreciate out of this game is not only the graphics, but the realistic appeal to everything within it. Yes, I know this is a fantasy game... but it truly stands apart from the other MMOs that have failed to be even remotely realistic...Thread: Why PVP is such a Burden for the PVE Crowd!PVP can be fun and suck you in, but it's NEVER fun to have your character Nerfed to appease an aspect of the game you may never partake in. Thread: A few concerns, mainly the soul system.1) Noone feels special. You dont feel like a "hero" in this world. You didnt figure out a spec, and use it as one of the only people on the server. No everyone can have that spec, its a matter of short time before its on the net, and people can freely use it, thus becomming a regular spec. The induvidiallity (sp?) is out the window, and your just Joe the Regular.Thread: Awesome ULTRA settings Screens From My BETA!Thread: Trion... we want cloaks!!We want cloaks... I noticed in CB4 that the equipment screen had a blank slot on the bottom left... cloaks or back armor just add more personality to your toon. Even if its just for cosmetic reasons... we want cloaks. Stats would better though.

Thread: -Anti-Aliasing Response-'We are currently working to integrate Anti-Aliasing into RIFT, though at this time it is not available. We have heard the community's feedback, and are working to right the situation.'Thread: what happens at level 50Having seen what damage the BG's are going to do to world pvp, I had a thought today, what happens at level 50. If you dont raid an you loath battlegrounds. The game world is quite small, so it doesn't really leave much for those players to do. There wont be any world pvp other than the farmed pvp soul players who will vastly out gear the other player's. The world being small means it will be hard for them to go out to grind for items or just for fun... I wonder what content they are going to have to separate them form the others.Thread: Cleric does NOT mean 'Healer'Clerics does NOT mean 'Healer' Warriors does NOT mean 'Tank' Rogues/Mages does NOT mean 'DPS'
These callings do not determine what your role is going to be. YOU determine that by picking certain souls. You should pick a class (calling) because you like a certain play style. Yes clerics/warriors have traditional healing/tanking roles. But guess what? Those roles are spread out to other classes as well.Thread: Do not make this game gear-dependant.We all know WoW's story (I know this isn't WOW, don't worry) - and even AOC went from being fast paced to a grind where armour makes a difference. I truly HOPE that RIFT will not shoot itself in the foot by making the game gear dependant, seeing as we are supposed to be able to specc between roles.Thread: Rift, please avoid incentivizing instanced playOne thing I worry about with Warfront (battlegrounds-style) PvP is that both in WAR and WoW, you tend to have people sitting around waiting for their queue to pop to do instanced PvP and not doing open-world PvP (where it exists) and the world feels empty as a result. I hope that there are superior incentives for doing other things in the world so that Rift does not veer towards lobby/instance style play that makes for an empty world. MMOs should be more about the world they present to players and less about instances that have nothing to do with the actual game world or building a community. WAR suffered from this, and was less than it could have been. I'd rather see greater incentives for open-world PvP (in designated zones) and rifts.Thread: I made 12 new widescreen wallpapers for everyone!Very nice wallpapers! Thread: Rift Website Lore summarisedHere is a summary of all the lore that can be found on the official Rift website. I just copy and pasted it all in one document with some images to make it look somewhat nicer. I did this because I hate to read from the web and search all of the articles, because there are a lot! Thread: Character Customisation: For those who spend hours creating individualty...I believe character customisation in Rift is severly basic and lacking, and could be improved to an extent where there is still enough limit in customisation to keep an army of multicoloured mutants at bay from Telara.Thread: Lore...as I understand itBasic outline of the lore. Thread: So You Wanna Feel Useful... The Dominator Guide. So you want to be a dominator.
Good for you! Every good group will need one however every bad group will thwart you. The dominator is a VERY group dependant soul and requires constant communication and teamwork to reach its peak performance!Nice in-depth look at this soul.

Thread: Scarlet Gorge: World PvP BeginsIt seems to me that we have a reason for all out world PvP here for the first time in Rift, in Scarlet Gorge. I am very hopeful for this and can't wait to see what the devs have planned for this new zone. Thread: Armor Model PicsI spent some time this beta going around and taking screenshots of the armors and clothing in game to see what all is out there and get some good feedback to Trion about it. However, I thought I'd share some of the pics here on the general forum so those who haven't gotten into a beta could check them out for themselves and get a lil preview of the game.Thread: Fashions of Telara [Pics of what NPC's are wearingAlrighty, in the greatly anticipated (jk) follow up to my thread with the armor set pictures, here is: Fashions of Telara.Thread: I am missing the role of the puller, not only in Rift (long text)I would love to find a game whose developers have the guts to re-introduce a role that has been completely abandoned in the last decade - the puller.
Maybe Rift is not that game - yet. One can hope.Thread: Dear WoW Elitists: Please don't ruin RIFTSo how about this: You let us enjoy our game and you stay where you are and enjoy yours. Argue all you want amongst yourselves, hover over the auction houses in your sandstone drakes, spitting on everyone below you, spam trade with your epic loot and call each other bads to your hearts content. Who knows, in two or three years, RIFT may be as big of a pissing contest as WoW is today. But I'd at least like to enjoy the freshness and jerkless atmosphere of this game while I can and while the folks at TRION continue to emphasize cooperative over individual play. And while the majority of the people playing are open-minded, friendly and more excited about a new gaming experience than how much work, school or life they'll have to put aside to be 'better' at it than anyone else. Thread: Please Trion, Get Rid of Guns, It's Not too Late. So, this is a petition for Trion to take out these stupid Automatic Rifles and replace them all with good ole' fashioned bows and crossbows, if necessary. Crossbows should be the technology of the day, no semi-automatic guns. What's next, they gunna replace swords with Light-Sabers come the next expansion? Thread: RIFT needs 1 thing to make the pvp meaningful, and everyone is missing it.All RIFT needs are frontier like zones (which I believe it has to an extent) with objectives you capture/control with pvp. The Favour (or w.e it is called, I forget) you gain from open world PVP needs to be BETTER than warfronts if you are good, and worse if you are bad. AKA- do well, you open world pvp and raise in rank faster. Don't do well you can farm in Warfronts and have fun there till you catch up. Thread: [Confirmed] NO World PvP Zone a la Daoc/WAR on release, just world ganking Man i love rift but i know for sure that pvp wise at end game this game will end so fast... a Warfront can't keep people that like faction pvp long enough.Thread: The Cleric Souls - a quick summaryGreat post discussing the various Cleric souls. This was a big one for us -- just about the single most requested item -- and we're really happy to have it in game for you to try out already.
First, as you're wandering around the world and target people, if they're solo or ingroups/raids that are willing to accept new public members, you'll see a new button in the target frame that lets you join their group or merge your group into theirs if it fits.
Second, when you walk into an area where there's an event occurring (or an event like an invasion walks up to you), if there are other friendly players in the area who are open to grouping, you'll see a button up on the top of the screen that lets you join the nearest Public Group.Thread: Class balance going to be ignored? And I quote: "Question (to Devs): Are you guys worried about some super uber OP class combination that will pop up? The first and most important part of being a good healer is to make the choice. Do you want to be a healer, and only a healer, or do you want to mix offense and defence? If you choose the former, you are choosing to do everything in your power to heal, and nothing else. The latter, and you’ll be somewhere in between healer and DPS. It’s fairly obvious what the best healers pick. But there is plenty of options to choose, and plenty of different ways to play.Thread: Newbie to Ascended Warrior - A Tanks Guide to PvP!• In First, out last.
