Well everything I've done so far isn't very impressive, I did build a massive tower lit with torches so I can find my way home after the baddies kill me at night. No diamonds here yet but I have found a natural shaft that has a waterfall headed right down to pools of lava. I've lit the place up with torches like the 4th of July but I'm still having issues surviving at the creatures.
I know I was sprinting multiple times from spawn point to home base, craft a sword and descend back to get my stuff...only to die again...and again...and yes...again.
Hopefully I'll get to some more good stuff soon!

Heh, that's one of the buggers of Minecraft. If you die too far away or too far underground, it's a pain to get your stuff back. The mobs don't despawn, they wait for you in the dark! I've tried two times to build a mob trap now, one failed completely and the other never seemed to have mobs spawning in the darkroom. I'm working on #3 now.. Deeper underground and bigger. During the excavation process, I found an open cavern with lava at the bottom and I haven't found the top yet. I love these things about Minecraft. You can be completely surrounded by rock and suddenly find a massive cave that goes from top to bottom without stopping

Aww... poor Oatik. What you need to do is punch some trees and get some wood. Then build a crafting thingy, then build a wooden pick axe. Next find a nice cave or something and mine a hole right into it. Make sure to snag some coal to build yourself some torches. Then close the hole up behind you before it gets dark. Now starts your mining experience. The monsters are outside, and you're inside... safe and sound.
What we have been doing is digging a spiral staircase all the way down to the bottom (you'll hit bedrock, which you can't mine). Then we mine long corridors, collecting materials. Then you can take those materials and build large structures underground, or take to the surface, making sure to build a shelter that mobs can't get into. It's fairly simple to keep them out. But don't feel too bad. The first time I played, I died about four times before I was able to collect enough materials (wood and coal) to start my large, underground, mining excavation.
We have a server if anyone wants to play on it. Just be nice to the guys there and don't destroy their structures. Also, we have mobs turned off (because you actually can't kill them, they're currently bugged). Join us at: minecraft.logicgamers.com (type this into the multiplayer field).
A cheat/trick that you guys may be interested in, is when you pick axe is getting low on durability, if you throw it away, then pick it back up, it'll instantly regenerate it's health. This only works on multiplayer servers. It's kind of cheap, but handy if you're running low on materials. Also, some of the other multiplayer servers are worth checking out. I think it's called KPG or something like that. They have this huge underground forest, and tunnels that go on forever. It's awesome.

So you're saying I can block monsters out? It seems to be they are spawning from the inside already. I could probably start to wall them off on the inside...
So I guess I get to the bottom and start my underground world.

Well, they are anywhere that it's dark. Which is why when you're exploring a new cavern, you torch all over the place to light it up. You may have a few baddies in there somewhere (If there's an open enough area for them to consider it a "spawnable" location) but if you deal with them and then keep the place lit, they won't come back. Light = Safety, which is why Minecraft has been described as "Making you afraid of the dark again" Now if you're in a dungeon, that's a whole other ball of wax. Did you have to smash through Cobblestone that you didn't put down to get into where the beasties are? Are they all the same beasties? You've got a Monster Spawner in there somewhere. Find it, torch all around it and collect "phat lewts" from the chests Easier said then done, though!

Yeah, it's awesome how you can block off monster spawns. Loendal, I saw that you were own last night. We have a bug on our server that doesn't allow you to smelt. We're in contact with customer support to try and get that fixed. Also, we have some custom commands on the server too. Like you can create yourself a recall/hearthstone. That way you can always go back to your "home" area that you designate for yourself. You guys should check out this link. They are skins you can get for your character. My friend made one for himself that looks like Megaman. I'm currently making one that looks like Spider-Man. There are some pretty cool ones on this site that you can download and set as your own: Link (from Zelda), Master Chief, various G.I. Joes, lots of super heroes, there are nude people, monsters, etc. The best one has to be the Invisible Man. It's just a pair of eyes floating in space. LOL www.minecraftskins.com/

Ya, I was on your server the other night. If you look out into the water and see a box of dirt with torches on it, that's me Mine entrance. Went spelunking, found one cavern. How are you guys pulling up Redstone and such if you can't get Iron Pickaxes? Stone only goes so far

The axes we have are before the problem occurred. We're in talks with some server admins, trying to fix it. We had to reset the world yesterday. It's still not fixed though. We're supposed to switch to a new server today. Maybe that'll fix it.
I'd also like to point out that Kul now plays. Yay! Your turn Gackers.

Well, it's perfectly playable in Single Player Survival mode.. It's Multiplayer that's buggy * nudges Gack a little closer to the edge and hands him a small pile of Logs and Iron Ore Blocks * You know you want to....
