So I found this awesome new game. It's called Minecraft. I know it doesn't look like much, but give it a chance. I didn't think much of it when I first saw it either, but a friend started showing me what all you can do in the game, and I was thoroughly impressed! It's the ultimate sandbox game. You can literally create anything. If you have ever heard of a game called Scribblenaughts for the Nintendo DSi, it's similar to that. It reminds me of UO too, and it's browser based.
There's two version of the game. You can play the free version, which just throws you in the world and you have access to some of the advanced stuff and you can just start making things willy-nilly. My friend created a giant fort.
Now if you pay for it (it's a one time donation of $13.00), you play the actual game. In the game, you start out with noting but you hands. You harvest wood to build tools. With those tools, you can harvest great items. You can use the wooden items to create, say, a wooden pick axe. With the pick axe, you can harvest stone. Then you can use the stone to create a better pick axe, which can harvest greater materials.
The items you create suffer durability. Wooden items, obviously degrade faster than stone ones. Stone items degrade faster than iron. And so on....
At night time, there are skeletons, zombies, spiders, and other things that go bump in the night, that try to kill you. So you want to create yourself a shelter from these things.
The world is full of life too. You kill cows for leather, sheep for wool, pigs for food; you can grow a garden and all sorts of things. The world has physics set to it as well. For example, my friend built a bridge across a piece of land. After a while, the grass under the bridge started to die. it was in the shade, not getting sun. There are a lot of little things like that in the game.
The world is randomly generated every time you create a new world, so you'll never be in the same one twice. You can also play multiplayer, and have several people in the same game. On top of that, you can host your own servers for people to play in.
The video on their homepage isn't all that great. It doesn't really show you the capabilities of the game, so here are some YouTube links to videos that give more detail about. I would suggest watching the first video to get an idea of what the game is really about. Also, the guy who narrates these is hilarious. I think he's in love with this game.
