Something I've noticed in my first 10 levels of playing here- I've run into some nice folks. One guy gave me 5 gold in the starting area. I've had people buff me with damage shields and power buffs while I was fighting (and of course I buff fellow newbies as well- they often thank me or bow or /hug). I often see people ask a question in chat that is answered with decent advice. I've yet to meet a jerk.
I helped a guy transfer a weapon to an alt- he thanked me and then 15 minutes later offered me a naturalist ring that he got as a drop that he couldn't use.
And this is a free server, remember.
It reminds me a bit of the Good Old Days.
