I will admit to not being particularly fond of Popo's new appearance when the Catacombs engine went live, but it's not like it was possible to go back to the old. If you wanted to play DAOC after Catacombs, you needed the patch for the graphics so I had to do the best I could Either way, Uthgard is a great find! I can't say as I've found much roleplaying, but then again I haven't been searching real hard either. One thing to note that I thought was funny/ironic/sad was I went to check the official game servers, and there were 1300 people playing there on Ywain. Uthgard was sitting at 570ish, little under half the same population as the normal game. I also took a stroll out to EMain this morning Tattletailed to my fellow Hiberys on a couple of Midgaard's finest prowling around the thimble and then took the fireball express back to Mag Mell, courtesy of the Midgaard Border keep. Horray for Original Frontiers!

I can't wait to go running around in the old frontiers again, was just starting to get the hang of it when Mythic changed it all, and it turned in to the land of lag for me. And this time no swaying zombie bots will be there, they are completely banned. ;D

I think part of the issue I had with the most recent graphics is that my characters looked different when they switched over to the new engine. Sure, the graphics are nicer, more 'modern', but I was rather fond of how I looked for all those years! Also, I like going back to a game as it was, it never seems to work when you go back and an older game has WoW-type quests and gameplay and updated looks. If I wanted to play a newer type of game, I'd...play a new game Ohhhhh Morrrriiieeeeionnnn..... Ta da!

I thought I remembered that option for switching to old/new appearance!
Uthgard is safe, for the moment, from this roaming keen. The fan on my video card stopped, and I'm waiting on a replacement. I'll be there sooooon! <bounces around in anticipation>

Oh goodness, they have OLD appearances there? I could make Sinaedh look like the real Sinaedh?
I have to say, since I did not really play Hibernia enough to get accustomed to the old, I like the newer Firbolg better.
But... all you folks play Hibernia! Ah well.

A classic look option, nice! OK, I admit I'm considering trying this now...

Anyone's who's interested feel free to ask questions and I'll try to answer. It's pretty easy to get setup actually I still have the current DAoC client on my computer. Am I correct that the Uthgard client is quite separate on one's computer from DAoC proper and named differently, etc? Actually I wouldn't mind having fun playing DAoC with a bunch of like-minded people. Just poking around a bit lately in DAoC has been surprisingly enjoyable. I dusted off my cleric from Gareth and actually had some fun pugging ... 10k RPs in no time at all and didn't really get much crap from min/maxers and the like. (However, a couple of attempts at role play fell on deaf ears). I've got a couple of Midgard-characters that will probably introduce themselves to Sinaedh here pretty soon. But the best option would be a group of like-minded adventurers playing together ... and for free. (EQ2 I guess also a possibility, but a quick review of the restrictions for the FTP version seems to dampen that a bit. It seems on the surface like a lot of functionality is being withheld.)

The Portal program uses the most recent and up to date client version. However, Uthgard is striving to make a "Classic" server (As Mythic promised over and over again) where there is no TOA, I'm not even sure if SI is in there. Darkness Falls is. I think housing is in place, but haven't really gone to investigate it yet. The Instanced dungeons aren't functional and they have supplanted the new Frontiers with the old ones (I've already taken a run up to the Midgaard Portal keep ). Got a friend of mine to give it a whirl too. It's really been alot of fun and I haven't seen the population go below 400 once. From what I understand, it's been known to hit peaks of 1200 players before, which is pretty much identical to the Official servers Edit: Hrm.. After rereading, I don't think I answered your question. Yes, the Portal stuff is separate. You never actually run your DAOC Official client at all, you launch from the Portal and it takes over from there. You launch the normal DAOC Official if you want to connect to Ywain and all the official stuff.
