I remember in UO smacking skeletons and watching my sword skill go up. After a while, it stopped going up smacking skeletons (or it went up rarely). So I had to find another more dangerous mob to smack on. People often soloed in UO, but grouping was great- you could group with anyone of any skill level, no restrictions. I was grouped with some multiple GM guys once (grandmaster level, 100% in a skill) and they kept aggro most of the time while I whomped on giant spiders from behind, my sword skill going up fast. That was great! Except for every once in a while a giant spider would get annoyed at me and bite me and the poison would kill me. But none of that fake level restriction business! I like skill-based stuff!
And the sandbox angle was cool, too. There were a couple dozen neat places to go to fight scary mobs, no 'you're level 30 so you must be in Stranglethorn Vale next' predictability. You could run down a road as a noob but if you wanted to go off the road a little ways and there were solitary Liches wandering the woods. MAN, they were tough as nails. They'd fireball you and if you didn't get in close and get solid hits on them you'd be dead. They'd rummage through your stuff and take an item out of your pack, often it was your prized magic weapon, then you had to res, re-equip yourself at the bank and go back and find the same Lich and kill him to get your magic sword back. Oh and your gear would be lootable after 7 minutes of your corpse laying there, any player could loot you then. You had to move fast, and you tended to keep out of stupid situations because there were consequences. Dying too would lead to losing fame, so you could go from 'the famed' to 'the notable', sort of like an old movie star not getting in any new movies. No 'using the death system to travel' crap like in the games today where dying doesn't matter at all.
