I had to comment briefly on Massively's recent article, GDC10: A first glimpse at The Secret World. The Secret World has been Funcom's mysterious project in development for some time now, but the details are now coming out- here's a brief rundown of game features:
Contemporary/alternate universe setting (think X-Files)
No classes
No levels
A mix of magic and modern abilities (should you use fire magic or assault rifle?)
Powers (skills) system that allows you to swap out different builds on your character at different times; "This allows more options for those alt-a-holics among us who may want to play a healer one day and a tank the next."
4-man groups
State system that allows players to put friendly or enemy targets in certain states that give beneficial or harmful effects
Clothing does not affect stats- wear what you want solely based on looks
3-faction PvP endgame
Now this is very exciting to me, because there are a lot of FRESH things going on in this game. I can't tell you how happy I am to get away from the typical class/level system, and a contemporary setting is a nice change. The ability to play different roles by swapping out known abilities is awesome. Separating how you choose to look from your stats is a long-overdue idea. And 3-faction PvP takes a winning formula from DAoC and Planetside and resurrects it.
I will definitely try out The Secret World. Kudos to Funcom for breaking the typical MMO mold and developing a unique game! New approaches like this may breathe life into a stale genre.
