I had a thought pop into my head...yes, just the one. Maybe we should just take that first M off of MMO and go with multi-player online. Today games are sliced into servers and shards, instances and portals, I mean we're all playing the same game, but we're not really playing it together. So dwell on that a bit...
The thing is, that doesn't bother me, I rarely interact with people I don't know, unless they are trying to kill me (then I try to kill them right back). So overall I'd probably be happy with a single player game if we could all group up in a 4-man co-op.
So here I am, playing solo in my MMO, paying $15/month to see other people run around doing their own thing. If we're lucky we sell each other some items in the auction house. So where are we going?? I don't think we're headed back to the glory days, not when people play for ten hours a week instead of forty. It's not like you have time to build community in two months when 50% of the people have already rage-quit.
I leave you all with the empty pit-of-the-stomach feeling because I offer no answers, only vague grumblings. Maybe I should re-title this "Feel good blog of the year..."

We are definitely heading in that direction- STO is heavily instanced and places you into groups automatically. Global Agenda (admittedly more of a shooter than an MMO) is all instances with a game hub lobby , and places you in groups automatically (no talking necessary, you solo MMO heroes!). SWTOR is going to be heavily instanced with...well, you see the trend here.
If I had to guess what things would be like a few years from now, I'd say more of the same, with the occasional niche retro independent game that is a virtual world (usually poorly funded and not very polished). MMOs could be called COOGs (Co-Op Online Games). Really, when you think about it, MMOs are turning into FPS-style games- mostly instances with a few other players involved.
