After a few hours of downloading the game from Steam, and then a couple hours updating the game, I was ready to play.
I visited some old characters on my account- I have a 23 Druid and a 23 Ranger, and several others level 10 or below. I decided that I wanted to start over from scratch, partly because I couldn't remember the details about how to play my already-existing characters. Some changes had been made since I played them anyway- it was easier to start over.
I rolled up 2 characters- a Varanjar Shaman and a Thestran Druid- but deleted them both after a handful of levels. I had played a few Varanjar characters in the past, and had leveled in the Tursh area of Thestra a couple of times too. Even though I enjoyed revisiting the old familiar locales, I decided to try a different starting area.
The continent of Thestra was where I had done 90% of my previous playing. So I decided to play on the continent of Qalia. Thestra was more of a European-style setting; the archipelago of Kojan was comparable to the Far East and Oceania; Qalia is similar to Arabia and parts of Africa. I decided to play on Qalia, since this huge continent was largely unexplored by my previous characters.
What class to pick? I enjoy hybrid classes, and also I would be soloing most of the time, so it would be helpful to have healing capability and a pet. The Shaman class fit this idea the best. A healer/buffer/caster that can wear medium armor and wield blunt weapons or a spear. They get a pet or can shapechange by level 15 when they pick one of 3 patron gods to follow. Like many of the classes in Vanguard, they have plenty of utility as well, including a valuable runspeed buff. Runspeed really helps when you are playing in a vast world.
So, Shaman it was. I decided upon the Varanthari race- desert horse nomads, large and powerful of body, a barbarian race of the savannah of northern Qalia.
For my name, I like to use a handful of familiar ones that I've used before. So I deleted my very first character, a level 10 Warrior and reclaimed his name- Morreion.
The last choice to be made- where to start, my Varanthari homeland or the Isle of Dawn- a new-ish starting area where the first 8 to 10 levels can be done with lots of newbies around you? I decided to start in my homeland to get the flavor of the culture and the landscape.
Incidentally, the Vanguard website has a handy way of documenting your character- you have a character entry on their site. Morreion can be found at this link.
