I was doing something the other day and it reminded me of playing Warhammer: Age of Reckoning. I had some fond memories of running around as my little goblin shaman, healing teammates and zapping enemies. I had a lot of fun on that little guy, and my big guys too. Then it hit me... I'll never be able to do that again. I was suddenly very sad. I've had nostalgic moments of playing Metroid, Mega Man, Ninja Gaiden, Super Mario World and other games from my childhood. When I had those feelings, I just dusted off my old NES/SNES (or fired up an emulator), and pulled out the cartridge of choice, blew in it, and played until my nostalgia was satisfied. It was nice, and fulfilling. However, I realized I won't be able to do that with a game like Warhammer. It's not because I don't still own the game disc; it's because the servers have been shut down. Even if I wanted to play UO or DAoC, I still could. They're both still running. Now UO has drastically changed, but the game was popular enough that I can find special ruleset servers that run it around the time of The Second Age (which most players agree was the best time). Not so with WAR. I can't jump back into a game that's condensed to one server. I can't jump back into a game that's changed a lot, but still similar. I can't find player-crated servers to play. I can't even put in the disc that I paid hard earned money for. All I have are the memories and a handful of screenshots. It's sad. I'll miss that game.

It's too bad that companies don't allow dedicated volunteers to keep a server going with their own money...I guess that's why emulators can be popular

I know that Mark Jacobs has stated that if Camelot Unchained never sees the light of day, due to whatever circumstances, or if it ever gets shut down, for whatever reason, that they will compile and release the game engine's code and let other's create/continue the game. More developers should do that. As long as no profit is being made on the game, what's the harm?
