With the recent news of Vanguard Shutting Down July 31st , it got me to thinking.
Funny enough, I'd been playng there again for the last month or so. I'd gone back to Vanguard a few times over the years since its release, and now that it's free to play, I was actually having fun there again. I have several characters between levels 10 and 23 (level cap is 55).
Vanguard hearkens back to older-school MMOs. It's a huge world with many starting areas (and playable races) over 3 continents and several different zone paths to level up in. It's a completely seamless world- no loading screens, even when going in any of the many dungeons there. One of my favorite things is looking across the vast distances in the game- the scenery is really nice-looking. The community there is a good one, and has increased in number since the game went FTP. There's a diplomacy card-game (in-game) totally separate from adventuring if you like something different.
Vanguard is not without flaws. The game has bugs. The character models aren't the best. It came out in 2007, so it isn't the newest shiny thing on the block.
I decided that I'd see how far I could get before the game shuts down in 6 months. I want to see the sights I haven't seen there yet. There are at least 2 guilds I know of there that are recruiting right now, this could be fun.
In the game, right now I'm playing Terrynon the Halfling Ranger (he's level 22 as of this writing). I have several other characters there as well. If you try out the game, look me up. I'd be happy to help you out.
If enough people are interested, we could start our own guild. Not that I'm expecting that but another option is joining one of the guilds that I've been invited to join recently.
Anyway, I thought I'd let folks know what I'll be doing MMO-wise for a while. Keep an eye on the Vanguard Forum here at Far Journeys, I'll post occasionally there about my adventures.
Here's some Vanguard Information Links if you're interested.
