Well,
Okay I have to confess. I haven't played Vanguard that much.
In my free time this weekend I also started up a character on LOTRO.
I'm getting addicted. LOTRO is not so bad. There are some things about it that bug me but, it's really well polished, and there is, from what I have seen so far, a large RP community.
I think I found the first 3D MMO I might stick with since DAoC.
I haven't abandoned Vanguard yet:) I will get back to you on it.

OK, LOTRO was fun- the Far Journeys folk had a group going there on 2 separate occasions over the years: farjourneys.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=lotroI haven't played it since it went F2P, but we had a good time back in the day! Check out The Prancing Pony for RP, and there was the occasional music concert as well

I only have tapped into Vanguard briefly, and it's got a look that reminds me of the original DAoC a bit. And the really far draw distances were impressive. The first character I started was on Qalia (That right? The desert continent) and the the first thing I saw was standing on top of a huge cliff and seeing rolling mountain islands in the distance. That is cool. I do like that aspect.
But I was also trying LOTRO at the same time and in comparison I felt like Vanguard wasn't nearly as polished as LOTRO. I'll play some more I'm sure, the nice part of F2P.
Prancing Pony was where I was last night on the Landroval server. Some great RP there, and a lot of players. Seems like it might take some time to get into the RP, there was definitely a lot of player run plots being discussed. But still it was mighty fun.
