UO sounds great- I've been tempted to try the UO Forever private server...

Haha, thanks for the memory on that Loendal. I am glad you managed to save that cause I only assume the original forums are no longer around. Magdalina, I barely recall.
I regret never taking any screenshots of some of those times. Did you ever save any? Enjoyed looking at a few of the screenshots Morreion has posted up around here.
A friend of mine played UO Forever for a brief time and he said he enjoyed it but he doesn't do any RP.
I know a lot of folks find it hard to get into because the clients are too outdated for their tastes, or the game mechanics too wonky/unfriendly. But so far the community where I am is active and going strong. In fact I just finished a city council meeting with the king of the lands himself who is fully RPed by someone.
If RP is something you're interested in I have been pretty impressed with the game in that regard so far.

Also Morreion I saw your question about my impression on returning to DAoC.
Very disappointed. I can't put my finger on it exactly but it definitely feels different somehow and very dulled down.
There just doesn't feel like enough detail to it. It's almost as if the whole thing has been streamlined. RvR was tons of fun and Im sure it still is, I admit I didnt have time to get into it much while I was there, but that pretty much seems like the whole game now.
Eh, I don't know. It's just. Different, feels like they gave up on it a bit. What did you think of it?

I went back to DAoC 4 or so years ago and the one thing that struck me right away was that it used the more modern graphics engine from the Catacombs expansion. Now I know many may find this weird, but I wanted the old classic or Shrouded Isles graphics engine- that's how I remember my characters looking from 2001 to 2004, and the new graphics engine just struck me as too different than the classic DAoC that I was looking for.
I too noticed more quests and such, which felt sort of WoWish...
When I go back to a game, I'm looking for that classic vintage experience. I don't want one of these games to try to be more WoWlike. If I wanted that, I'd be playing WoW again!
This could be an example of 'you can never go back'...but I've gone back to UO a few times. Currently I'm dabbling in Vanguard once more. no reason not to since it went F2P!

Sadly enough I think you're right. There's no going back to DAoC.
Perhaps I'll try Vanguard in the near future, I read a bit about it, it reminds me of DAoC a bit from what little I've seen on it, and there's a plethora of races to choose from, I like that. One of the only things I dont like about UO is the lack of your standard high-fantasy races, with the exception of elves and gargoyles , no little lurikeens runnings around.
Whats the RP like there?
Thats really what's keeping me invested in UO right now. I'm really getting into the RP there. Everyone is pretty creative and there's a ton of player and EM run plot-lines to get caught up in.

There is a bit of RP in Vanguard- there's an RP guild, drawing a blank on their name right now- though Vanguard is a huge place (one of the reasons I like it) so you can be really spread out from other players. There's a fair share of bugs in the game, it's sort of a failed attempt to recreate classic play from the MMOs of the 90s. Plenty of starting areas and races, in-game housing, boats, flying mounts, 2 large continents and an archipelago, and nice scenic views far across the landscape, the diplomacy card game if you like it. Lots of dungeons. Seamless huge world. In-depth crafting system. The characters aren't the greatest to look at and did I mention there are bugs? I still have a soft spot in my heart for it

So I'm going to go there... EA destroyed both UO and DAoC. Once they added resistances to UO (with lots of other changes), I couldn't go back. As you've stated, they made DAoC too WoW-like (even though I did enjoy WoW). I regret never taking any screenshots of some of those times. Did you ever save any? Enjoyed looking at a few of the screenshots Morreion has posted up around here. I don't think I ever took screenshots in UO either. Well, none that I still have anyways. I had a few of some weird glitches and areas, or something funny someone did. I lost all of my screenshots from any game I played before 2007 a while back when I reformatted my computer and forgot to save them.

From 1998 to 2001 I had some screenshots that I lost (they were too small- don't ask, I wasn't very sharp back then!), but since then I've managed to save them onto disks so they've survived different PC changes. I take a lot of screenies. Every time I hear about people losing their screenshots and documents (it happens a lot) I cringe horribly- they are irreplaceable.
