The Adventures of Kelyss (Pronounced KAY-liss), Part 1 or “You want me to do WHAT?”
Things didn’t exactly start out all peaches and cream for me when I decided to choose the path towards becoming an adventurer. My training in the local temple hadn’t been too bad, and I only had to put up with the usual amount of hassles and grief from being a woman in a man's world. Well, an adventuring woman in a farming village in the boonies anyway. I mean, really... milking cows and marrying a farmer was definitely not anywhere near the top of my list of things I wanted to accomplish in my life. I had a calling to go with my great desire to see the bigger world out there. As soon as I passed my tests and became a full fledged paladin, I was heading out to make my mark on the world and get as far away from this little village as possible. I mean… what kind of self respecting village calls itself “Blargh” anyway? It sounds like you’re practically gagging every time you say it. But enough of Blargh… I didn’t even look back as I boarded the skiff to the coastal trader that was going to take me to Korthos. I’d heard about it as a thriving seacoast town, definitely a step up from where I was from.
Only one small problem… Well, all right, a pretty big problem… in the form of a dragon! Not just some cute little thing doing acrobatics in the air to make you go oooooh and ahhhhhh, but a great big honking creature who flew down out of the skies and let out this massive roar of ice and sound. Suddenly, that ship I thought was so big and sturdy became a giant cloud of splinters and gore. I was lucky enough to have been standing close by the rail on the far side from the dragon when the boat exploded and I got blown off into the water about 100 feet away. I was almost in tears as I shed what few nice things I had been wearing so they wouldn’t pull me under and the rest of my belongs promptly sank to the bottom with the remained of the ship.
The last thing I remember of my time in the water was grabbing a five or six foot chunk of mast and hanging on for dear life.
The next thing I remember was waking up and spitting out something slimy and gritty that soon determined to be a clot of sand covered seaweed. Blargh wasn’t looking quite so bad at the moment as I sat up and then tried to order my thoughts to figure out just where I was. As I arose, I saw a small figure going through the wreckage on the beach, stopping every now and then to tuck something in his pocket or pack. I was just about to duck back down behind a rock when he noticed me. “Oy! Hey there! Can you speak to me?” he said with an interesting accent. As he drew closer, I could see he wasn’t a child, but actually a fully formed man, just rather small in size. (While I originally thought him to be a midget, I soon found out there was a whole race of similar looking creatures, both male and female who called themselves Halflings.)
I stood up completely and told him I could indeed speak. Then I asked him if he could tell me a bit about where I was. As I realized I was only half dressed and his eyes were looking me over quite openly and he gave me a bit of a leering grin, he replied that I was on the coast of Korthos Island, and that if I was interested, he’d direct me to someone who might be able to give me more assistance in getting to the village itself. He’d even provide me with a weapon so I could partially defend myself should I be attacked. I could feel my combat abilities deep within me, but I couldn’t feel any of the other skills I had known. What the heck… I was already half naked and destitute, some rags and a sodden and empty backpack my only possessions. “All right, I’ll follow you… Lead the way.” And so he did!
