[glow=red,2,300]Don't Panic! It's not real![/glow]
Slave Hack is another niche game for the curious. Ever since I first got ahold of Uplink and played it I have been intrigued with a very small genre known as Hacking games or Hacking Simulations; and trying to find a Multiplayer version.
I stumbled upon this Slave Hack merely by accident and I've been engrossed for the past few days by it. It's all completely web-based and yet still feels immersive enough to get those little tingles up your spine when you are pulling off something sneaky. Every player has their own VPC (Virtual PC) with a dedicated Internet connection, a tiny hard drive and an itty bitty external hard drive as well. That's pretty much it.
Your job is to take over other VPC's, install viruses of various types and version levels and make money and reputation all the while without getting caught by your fellow players.
Your first step would be to get some basic hacking software and low level viruses to install somewhere. Fortunately there's a Freeware site where you can grab these basics. Seems fairly cut and dry, and this is why it's more of a niche game then most. However, once you crack into someone's PC you are noted on their log. You MUST keep the logs clear or someone could get YOUR IP and come back and get you with a virus or worse. I've been deleted completely once and had my bank account drained by some bugger named Hazzard. I've been careful to the point of paranoia after that
Scattered out there amongst the various NPC's (Non-Player PC's) is a Riddle trail that leads to bigger and better software if you can figure out the riddle. I've gotten several steps along the path on this and I feel I'm fairly newbie-proof; though still lagging far behind the many big guns that are still out there. Currently stuck on a riddle entitled crypto.txt:
2/3
0/9.156-100+100.250-6.2_0_1
9_4.87/2*2.45+10-20/2.230+15,5*2
9_4.87/2*2.45+10-20/2.80+5*2
Somehow, this will translate into an IP Address that I can crack into and further extend my power and productivity. I have yet to get it figured out.
Anyway! As time goes on, you accumulate a collection of slave machines and the biggest scoring goal is slam someone with a DDoS attack; lots of points available there and you can actually damage someone's hardware with a heavy enough hit. From the looks of the Highscore list, this must be a necessity at some point or I will never show up on the list I've found a basic DDoS Virus, but haven't found the Remote I need to fire it off yet. However, most of my time has been trying to grow my slave list by keeping a close eye on my logs.
Once you get into a machine, you can sit there and camp out in their log screen and watch everything they are doing (If they aren't quick / smart enough to get their logs edited and cleared). You can get any number of IP's just by watching someone else go about their own nefarious doings. I've gotten several IP's this way and hacked my way into those machines to further my own ends. I've also gotten several bank account details, due to sloppy log cleaning vigilance Haven't tried draining their coffers yet, as I've heard that the bank in which my money is kept is heavily camped, and as such people would likely just steal it out from under me if I don't go and use it immediately. I just haven't gotten around to getting a different bank account yet in a more secure bank.
So far the biggest rush I had when playing when when I caught someone coming into my machine. I got his IP, went to his machine and started watching his activities. Bugger installed at least three viruses on my machine and tried to change his password on me while I was trying to get my own viruses onto his machine at the same time. I had the timer going on my own password change and finally got smart and starting using my higher ranked .hdr (Hide) program and snuck a virus onto his machine and then hid it. So far as I can tell, he hasn't found it yet. We were literally going back and forth between eachothers machine in real time, trying to be sneaky enough to blank out log entries and cover our tracks before the other saw us. The game is engineered in such a way as you FEEL like you're actually breaking into people's machines covertly and trying to pull off stunts behind their back. That excitement of "I might get caught" is very much alive and well in here. Getting caught can be catastrophic if the player is malicious enough. He could delete every file on your hard drive, which is a huge time inconvenience because you have to go and get all the software again and hope you can get your IP changed out before he strikes again. He could also just throw a virus onto your machine that you can't stop and he'll rake in the money off your back. If you don't keep your logs clean while you are collecting money from your slaves, he could take your bank account to $0. The only thing they can't touch is the External Hard drive; which is where you want to keep your Password cracker at the very least and probably a few basics like Waterwalls and Firewalls if you can fit them out there.
I caught someone else coming into my machine and I've upgraded my Waterwall (The tool used to get past someone's Firewall of the same or lower rank) at least 5 times and I STILL can't even make a dent in his. He's probably a well established player, but I will someday get past that armor and tag him If only for the "Gotcha!" value.
With your collection of slaves, you give them orders to run Mail Spammers, Warez Sales or DDoS Attacks of varying degrees of capability. You collect your money from these on occasion (Whenever you want to) and that's how you upgrade your hardware to take on bigger and stronger targets. Software gets bigger as it's revision number increases, so you need more Bandwidth to download it quicker, bigger hard drives to store it and faster processors to run them with any kind of efficiency. I've been able to upgrade my CPU, Connection and Hard Drive in the 12 hours I've played so far.
It's really quite alot of fun and as I said, the "Might get caught" value alone is enough to make you smile. It's certainly not a game for everyone, but it's intriguing to say the least. I'm going to have to head out now, I've got at least 5 processes running in there for downloads and uploads and I've got to get those logs whacked before I get clobbered It's free, it's fun and if you like the whole hacking mystique, it's got the right feel to it. Join me!
Give me your IP and I'll help you out... No really! I swear! No No... That virus isn't MINE.. That must have been someone else! * tip tip tap, click click *
