You never can tell what might prompt a blog post and let me tell you once I decide to post you don't want to try to unravel the train of thought that led me down the path...anyway...small aside there.
The real question is how much time to you spend in character creation? Does your character have a certain look? Are you disappointed if you can't have that look?
I can say these days I spend more and more time in character creation even if the changes are barely noticeable in the game. I'm sure I spin through each option at least twice...which was the best hair, 4 or 11? Then I change my face tattoo and have to rethink the whole facial hair option again...
I spent 20 minutes deciding on a name for my Rift pet in beta! I went with Saffron. (Firefly geeks unite!)

For myself, I like a detailed character creator, but then I don't spend as much time there as I figured I would. I get a certain look, and generally go with it. However, if the character creation process is as simple as WoW's, I will not like looking like every other character out there. So I want a detailed character creator, even if I don't spend a lot of time there!

I tend to spend a good five to ten minutes going through options and such, trying to find combinations that work. It's utterly useless as most everything out there now hides any and all details from plain view. Nobody's going to notice my eyes are blue instead of green but I like to see what's available. I spent alot of time in APB's character generator because there's just so damn many sliders! Horizons too, but that's because I'm very very picky when it comes to Dragons
(Random side note: I have yet to see a better dragon portrayed then in the 80's film 'Dragonslayer'. I have nitpicked most every other film dragon that's come along. Second prize goes to the dragon in Eragon)
Now... * points at Elethea * You want to talk about time spent in a character creation screen? * point point points * Her! Talk to her!

I spend a good amount of time at the character selection screen. I know that one time in DAoC, a few friends and I rerolled new characters to take to Thid or something. They all were in game and half a level above me by the time I finished creating my character. I take a lot of time and effort to make my characters look the way I want them to, even if no one will ever notice the color of my eyes. I don't always have a specific look I want for my characters; I don't always try to make them look the same. However I do have an idea of what I'm going for. My main character, usually Regolyth, I always try to make look like me (or an idealized version of me). Rego is usually an elf, so I get as close as I can with that. Although given the option, I usually give him dark blue hair (which isn't the case IRL). He always has green eyes though, like me, and a skin tone like mine.

Character creation is like a mini game for me. I probably spend a little more than average in there, if there's anything to play with. I'm always disappointed if there's not lots of color picking and sliders though. Every new game that comes out I expect to have the biggest and bestest yet, but that's not usually the case. Hairstyles are always worth a big sigh. The limitations of rendering hair realistically coupled with having to make 6 or 8 offerings that will appeal to thousands is no doubt challenging. I'm still gonna whine about it though
