The Daily Grind: What do you think about travel in MMOs? (Massively)This is one of those mechanics that people either love or hate. Personally, I liked classic Vanguard, where travel was an integral part of the game- the world is so huge that it's an adventure moving around the different continents. I dislike instant travel that make a game seem like a collection of instances. A reasonable compromise is the way UO and classic WoW handled things- you traveled to a place, but could mark it with a recall rune (or add a gryphon master to your travel locations) and be able to recall or fly to those locations in a swifter fashion on subsequent visits. But I have to say that being a player who thinks the journey is the destination, I like travel and exploration to be meaningful, not trivial.

I have to agree, I liked UO's recall system, and WoW's wasn't bad. I rather disliked DAoC's. Sure, it was cool that you actually had to travel by horse to get somewhere, but often times you had to jump off at two, three or even four towns to get the tickets to get where you want to go. Not that you should be able to AFK for five minutes while you travel, but both are rather tedious. Instant travel does seem to kind of defeat the immersion.
