The Daily Grind: What crazy idea should someone try? (Massively)
I'd like to see different layers of play in MMOs. For instance, you have the typical leveling in different zones experience that evolves into an RTS-type level of play where, when you have enough money and influence, you (or your prominent guild) can control a small part of the world- a village, a city, a small zone etc. You set the laws, the tax rate, direct economic activity etc. A game with different levels would have more staying power.
I'd also like to see more srtuctures that allow politics between players, guilds and alliances. EVE has this in a true sandbox, why not introduce mechanisms that allow this in non-sandbox games?
Another thing I'd like to see is unequal distribution of resources. It would make for a more lively harvesting/crafting/trading economic game if not all resources were equally available to every zone. Have a valuable resource far away that takes lots of effort to get that can be sold for good coin in places far away. Have caravans or merchant ships that make risky trading adventures to transport valuable resources to areas where they are in demand. Let players invest in these ventures and either get rich or lose it all on this economic subgame.
Of course, any artist knows the best thing for when a genre starts to stagnate: trying something truly absurd, something that breaks down basic assumptions of what should be done. And we're seeing games with systems that do precisely that, like TERA's action-oriented combat with no lock-on or Guild Wars 2 experimenting with environmental gameplay. But those only scratch the surface of all the assumptions about MMOs that could be turned on their ear. What insane idea would you like to see a game put into practice?
