The Daily Grind: Graphics don't matter? (Massively)From the comments section: I tend to agree that there needs to be a certain level of graphics niceness, even if gameplay matters more than looks. I've played games where the look of the graphics turned me off; I've played games that looked good where the gameplay turned me off. Both have their place.

I'm a total graphics snob, I'll admit it. A game's art style might be not too my particular liking but that's different than graphics that look 'outdated' -- nearly a kiss of death for me.
Morreion has taken me on a few visits to old, favorite games of his and that's one thing I always struggle with. I agree game play is important -- but if we're talking about a game to be displayed on a monitor in front of my face, then I argue that's it's a visual experience and it matters what it looks like.

Being an artist, graphics matter a lot to me. I can't stand to play an ugly game. There's a certain nostalgia to old games (I'm talking NES, SNES, etc. here), that graphics don't really matter. But I know that graphics are the first thing that catch my eye when I'm trying to find a new game to play.
I've suffered through some bad games before, simply because the graphics blew me away. However, bad gameplay is still bad gameplay, and the prettiest of graphics can't hold me forever if I don't enjoy the game. This goes is especially true with MMOs. I loved how gorgeous Aion was, but I couldn't stand the gameplay and mechanics.
A lot of games today look great, so it's easier to pass up good looking games, looking for good gameplay.

I remember you freaking out at UO- 'this looks like an MMO I'd play on a cell phone' I believe you said *laughs* And AO, where your character had 'spider arms'. Seriously though, those games were fantastic in their original context. We get spoiled by later improvements!

I admit liking a certain level of graphics, and animations can bother me just as much. I don't play WoW mostly because I don't like how it looks or moves. The alliance side is especially fugly... yuck!

A beautiful game with dull gameplay is just not worth it. Admittedly, I get drawn to games because of the way they look a good portion of the time, but if I suddenly discover that the game doesn't play well, the graphics are useless lag-producers. Gameplay has to take an equal or greater position then graphical eye-candy or it's just fluff to me. Look at LOTRO. That game is stunningly beautiful and I could sit and look at it for hours if I was looking for beautiful scenery, models and landscapes. However, I fall asleep while playing it! That can't be a good thing. (Go ahead and ask Elethea, she's seen me go on the nods while playing with her back when it was our main thing )

It's true, I had to bring a pillow to stop him getting a sore neck. ;D For me, I really do enjoy beautiful graphics, but it's not half as important to me as game play and actually having some kind of community. Soloing is great when that's what I'm in the mood for, I can be very anti-social at times. But it can get lonely and often discouraging, when it's all there is.
