Has anyone else looked into DC Universe Online? It looks freaking amazing. I'm assuming it's going to be a lot like City of Heroes, which bodes well for the game. I have always been a Marvel fan, but I'm considering picking this up and giving it a try, especially since no new MMOs are coming out anytime soon.

Apparently Jim Lee created the DCUO world. For those who may not know who he is, he's a comic book artist/writer. He's one of my favorites, and a co-founder of Image Comics, which most of you may have heard of.

If you are interested in checking it out, they're taking beta sign ups now. The game is currently slated for release on November 2nd. If you haven't seen it, you should watch the trailer for it. It'll give you goosebumps.

DC Universe Online or DCUO is an MMORPG being developed by Sony Online Entertainment - Austin. Jim Lee serves as the game's Executive Creative Director, along with Carlos D'Anda, JJ Kirby, Oliver Nome, Eddie Nunez, Livio Ramondelli, and Michael Lopez. EverQuest developer Chris Cao is the Game Director and Shawn Lord is also involved, and Geoff Johns is the principal writer.

On July 4, 2008, the first conceptual art was released for the game. The first trailer was released on July 14, 2008. New concept art and screenshots for the game were released the next day. The developers held a Q&A on the same day, where players could ask questions about the gameplay and other aspects of the game. Other interviews and information about the game have also come online. It was revealed on their Myspace page that the first public demo of the game would be shown during Comic-Con International. Other interviews have also been found regarding the game. Information about the games' reveal at Comic-Con have also surfaced. A making of DCUO video has been released. DCUO was also shown and playable in Pre-Alpha form at major conventions throughout 2009, such as New York Comic Con, E3 and Comic-Con International. The game has been scheduled for release in November 2010

DC Universe Online: Panel & Demo - Iconic Play
As part of MMORPG.com's continuing coverage of last week's Comic Con, Carolyn Koh reports on the DC Universe Online panel. Sony Online was showing off the 'Iconic Play' feature, a PvP player's dream. Check out Carolyn's impressions.

Like the other PvP battlegrounds, there are turrets to capture and activate, security drones to be released and pure beat them up combat between the iconic characters. I saw Batman, Nightwing, Harley Quinn and The Joker being played. “Just like you get a mentor character to learn from when you create your character, the idea behind the Iconics was for you to learn from the legends.” Senior Producer Wes Yanagi said as he showed me the gameplay. “The Iconics have the same powers that you see in game, and this is one way to learn more about your enemies in order to defeat them.”

“The Joker is a jack of all trades and a bunch of fun to play,” Wes continued as he showed me all the tricks he had up his sleeve. “You’ve got Crowbar Joker for close in melee and in his two-gun mode, he also has a jet pack.” Wes also popped Joker’s invulnerability skill by encasing himself in a gaily wrapped box, when he was being badly beaten up by Batman and Nightwing because he was talking to me. “Hold on,” he said. “I’m being beat up here. This skill is particularly useful. You can just sit in there and wait for your timers. Okay, here comes his goons.” And he sprang three goons to assist him in the fight.

I know we were looking for a common game to play. Personally, I'm getting tired of fantasy-based games (hence my playing SC2 so much right now). Maybe this is a good choice for us all?

Don’t come to DC Universe Online looking for another run-of-the-mill MMORPG experience because you simply will not find it here. If you are burned out on the current gaming market and looking for something completely different then chances are, DCUO is what you are looking for. For players new to the action game genre, there is a bit of a learning curve but it is definitely worth putting the time in to master the controls and I promise that learning your combos is the hardest part of the game. In my experience, the PvP instances have actually been quite hectic and fun. There’s something exhilarating about combat in DCUO when it’s done competitively that takes it a notch above other MMOs. It’s hectic, it’s crazy, and when done organized it’s an absolute blast. The downside is, just like in any match-made PvP game, when it’s not organized it’s hectic, it’s crazy, and it’s an exercise in frustration. It’s like any sport or competitive team game really.
