EVE Spotlight: An interview with CCP's trailer team (Massively)Very generally we have between two and three months for a big production trailer. The initial idea will either be created around an upcoming expansion or perhaps a goal of reaching out to new players. We'll hash out ideas around the team and eventually end up with a script and storyboard. From there we divide up the work between us and start creating scenes in Jessica. Meanwhile we're in contact with outsourcers to create the music and begin voice auditions.
With everything created, we edit using Adobe After Effects and do the final sound design in a studio in Atlanta, mixing in the music, voice-overs and effects. Finally the video is compressed into various formats and sizes and sent on its way via the interwebs.Includes a 13-minute video. Freddie Mercury spotted in EVE Online (Massively)EVE Online's new character creator went live yesterday in a mammoth 1.2 Gb patch. While some players (myself included) are still waiting for the patch to finish downloading, it's already clear that the new characters are a big hit with the EVE community.EVE Evolved: Mining 101 -- Mining efficiency (Massively)Although it's a relatively quick and easy profession to get into, there's a lot more to mining than meets the eye. Both miners and haulers have several skills, ships and modules available to upgrade their effectiveness and make the most of their play time. Finding out the best ore to mine or the best location to mine it also isn't quite as straightforward as it seems, which often makes it difficult to find a good mining spot. Once you've mined your ore, it's also not obvious how to get the most ISK out of it. Do you refine it yourself and sell the minerals, or will the raw ore be worth more on the open market?EVE Evolved: Mining 101 -- Advanced mining (Massively)Over the years, I've learned a few tricks and strategies for mining that have come in handy. If the local asteroid belts are stripmined clean and you need somewhere nearby to mine, for example, it's possible to use the mission system to spawn a practically endless supply of low-end ore. If setting up camp in high-security space isn't your thing, it can also be very profitable to run a nomadic mining expedition. Using a starbase as a base of operations, you can set up ore depots and refining stations in either normal space or wormhole space.A Basic Primer To Space In EVE Online (Pt 2) (Ten Ton Hammer) Wormhole space, political coalitions, and decade-spanning vendettas. As mentioned in my previous guide, the conquerable portions of the EVE universe seem to split up into about four mega-regions of space. These territories are based on a few things. Firstly and most importantly, they are based on how easy it is to move capital ships around.Five Frequently Asked Questions About Cloaking In EVE Online (Ten Ton Hammer) Make your questions about cloaking disappear with this handy FAQ.A lot of things can cause a cloaked ship to decloak and become visible. It is generally difficult to cause one's enemies to decloak, though, so these things usually occur by accident or through carelessness on the part of the cloaked pilot. EVE blogs examine CSM discussions on nullsec warfare (Massively)CCP's lead economist Dr Eyjo is said to have voiced concerns over the fact that new players are moving into the more PvE-focused wormhole content instead of forming alliances and moving into nullsec territorial warfare. This is understandable, as wormhole systems are much more friendly to colonisation by small groups. They offer a similar level of rewards to nullsec but the size of a potential attacking fleet is naturally limited by the size of connecting wormholes.--- Massively has some articles highlighting EVE's Council of Stellar Management- 'an elected committee of nine players who play an active role in the development of the game, bringing player concerns and proposals for the future direction of the game directly to CCP at biannual summits in Iceland.' An inside look at EVE Online's CSM: From June to DecemberIt was also apparent that the CSM is being used as a sounding board for new ideas more than it has been previously, with many developers participating on the CSM's private forums in discussion and debate outside the limited contact afforded by the summits. There are obviously still a few sticking points, but nothing can ever run completely smoothly.Massively's EVE CSM interview: EVE Gate, microtransactions and moreThe CSM still isn't happy that microtransactions are being considered. We unanimously agree we would prefer a microtransaction-free EVE. That said, this is in large part a business decision, and CCP is committed to seeing what microtransactions can bring them. We have made it crystal clear that any items gained through microtransactions should not give any sort of competitive advantage, and CCP has assured us that this will absolutely be the case.Massively's EVE CSM interview: Incarna and nullsec PvPDid the CSM get a sense that CCP was on the right track with regards small fleet objectives in nullsec?
We got a sense that they're aware the current design isn't working and is not encouraging small gang warfare at all. However, they did not reveal any concrete ideas to us about how to fix the problem.

Sansha incursions have begun in EVE Online (Massively)The moment EVE Online players have been waiting for has finally arrived. Sansha's Nation has begun its plan of regular incursions into known space. Using terrifying advanced technology suspected to be of Sleeper or Jovian origin, the Nation has begun sending masses of troops through controlled wormholes into constellations across New Eden. The powerful new Sansha ships found in these sites are controlled by a borg-like hive mind composed of the millions of citizens abducted from planets during last year's Sansha raid events. The Sansha ships are even named after the system their crews were abducted from, an eerie reminder that we could do nothing to prevent the Sansha raids.Simple Profits With Planets In EVE Online (Ten Ton Hammer) Not all planets are created equal. Some are better to plunder than others. When setting up new planets, it is useful to know how profitable each product that can be produced on a single planet will be. Of course, the amount produced will vary significantly depending on what planets are available, and the availability of particular materials on them. Still, it is generally best to angle for whatever will produce the most valuable material. The Planetary Interaction Update For EVE Online (Ten Ton Hammer) The Incursion expansion has made running planets so easy that everybody should be doing it.Essentially, you are controlling all of the attrached extractors at once. Once you are happy with your settings for an ECU, you can get it working again with three clicks. Easy as heck, and a huge improvement over the previous system.EVE Online: Incursion Interview Incursion, the EVE Online expansion, recently launched in its full glory with the final content deployment. The Sansha and some major game play improvements have finally arrived. MMORPG.com Industry Relations Manager Garrett Fuller recently had the opportunity to chat with several members of the CCP team to talk all things Incursion. Check it out and then leave us your thoughts in the comments below.EVE Evolved: Incursion in progress (Massively)Each incursion site even has its own mission objectives and tactical elements. My personal favourite encounter so far has been the vanguard mining colony, in which players must mine some unstable ore and use it to destroy a nearby battle-station. The defending Sansha ships must be killed to decloak a refinery, into which 300 units of the ore must be placed to start the explosive chain reaction. Another particularly awesome mechanic involves Sansha's forces activating powerful remote repair platforms, which a fleet member must hack into and shut down to prevent the enemy fleet from rapidly repairing.EVE planetary interaction improvements deployed (Massively)Developers Kristinn Þór Sigurbergsson and Cat Pinson discussed the major updates in a series of video devblogs leading up to the expansion. In a new devblog, CCP Omen has provided a more detailed explanation of the improvements and how you can take advantage of them.EVE's Industrial Sized Knowledgebase guide gets a makeover (Massively)This is a great updated PDF guide to playing EVE- it looks very nice, too. EVE Evolved: Incursion guide -- Fleet setup and tanking (Massively)When forming your fleet, you must decide whether it's going to be an armour-tanking or shield-tanking fleet. In the same way that it's a bad idea to fit both an armour and shield tank on one ship, it's generally unwise to both armour-tank and shield-tank in the same fleet. Splitting your logistics ships between shield and armour cuts down the maximum repair capability of the group when focused on any one player, which could prove to be a dangerous mistake if the Sansha bomber frigates decide to gang up on a single battleship.Candidacy opens for EVE Online's sixth CSM term (Massively)While many MMOs have a community team whose job it is to bring issues affecting players to the attention of developers, EVE Online goes one step further by involving players directly. Once per year, players vote on whom they want to represent the playerbase in meetings with CCP Games as part of the democratically elected Council of Stellar Management. During its 12-month term, each edition of the CSM works hard to compile a list of issues players are having with the game or its development, including balance issues, bugs and ideas for changes the developers might not have considered. The most important of these are scheduled for discussion at one of the twice-yearly CSM council summits in Iceland, in which the council converses directly with developers.EVE Evolved: Incursion guide -- Combat strategies (Massively)Co-ordinating the actions of an entire fleet is not an easy task, but EVE provides several tools to make things more manageable. The game's built-in voice chat provides fleets with a simple way to communicate that doesn't require participants to download a client. To coordinate fire and call for help, the broadcast pane in the fleet window is your most useful tool. Buttons on this pane allow pilots to signal to the fleet's logistics ships that they are in need of armour, shield, or capacitor. Fleet, wing or squad commanders can issue the order to target a particular Sansha ship by right clicking it and selecting the "Broadcast target" option.

I often think about playing EVE myself, Oat- a wide-open sandbox where players and their corporations and alliances are the primary content. A place where risk means real risk. I like reading about high-profile treachery, espionage, fleet battles, and everything else that gives this game character. It surely isn't your typical theme park.

CCP taking the first steps into EVE's Incarna (Massively)The upcoming deployment will add Captain's Quarters to EVE Online for new players and vets alike. When docked at a station, players will show up on a balcony connected to their quarters and be able to look up at the grandeur and majesty (or duct-tape and bondo) of their ships. All the normal functionality of docking will be present, and the developers have stated that there won't be any major differences in terms of docking time.EVE's Hulkageddon IV event begins today (Massively)Once or twice per year, EVE Online players across the world are gripped by the desire to destroy everything in sight. During the nine-day Hulkageddon bloodbath, players compete to destroy as many mining ships as possible. A variety of prizes are then handed out to individuals and corporations with the most kills or for special achievements completed during the event. The event was first organised by pirate Helicity Boson back in 2009, and so far it has been responsible for the destruction of several hundred billion ISK worth of Hulks and other mining ships.EVE Evolved: Making a better avatar (Massively)When you first enter the character creator screen, you're confronted with a blank canvas of an avatar -- relatively featureless and bereft of hair or modest clothing. While it's tempting to start sorting through the pretty hair styles and the currently limited selection of clothing choices, these are finishing touches that are best left until later. Pay close attention to the shape of your character's face, remembering that in this first design stage you're seeing a very neutral expression. If you make an angry face or a squint at this stage, your character will always have it. All changes made to one side of the face are automatically propagated to the other, keeping the face neutral and symmetrical.EVE Spotlight: An interview with CCP Soundwave (Massively)Players have noted that the new Sansha NPCs have been killing all the macro-miners in the incursed areas. Was this intended or just a happy coincidence?
I'll be completely honest: I don't really get involved with hunting macro-miners and botters. It's not that I don't care, but we have people in the company who do this for a living. If we've ended up killing a few of them, I'm thrilled, but I prefer to design for our massive majority of regular customers, rather than thinking of a small minority of criminals who would probably download cars if they could. We should always strive to make the best feature for our customers, and I'd have to decrease the quality of a feature because some people abuse the system. Added to that, I'm more excited about the total kill count.EVE Evolved: Tough lessons in corp management (Massively)While careful hoarding of corp roles and hangar access can avoid unnecessary theft and drama, ultimately those roles and hangars are worth nothing if the hoarding causes the corp to fail. With Massively Motivated, I will be putting the complete organisation and wealth of the corporation into the hands of several corp members. I'm ready to take that leap of faith and assign some directors, who between them will do with the corp anything they wish. There is always a risk that one of them will turn out to be part of EVE's dark underworld, a sleeper agent or opportunistic thief. But it's the existence of that antisocial element that spurs us to create a cohesive society, and it's the possibility of betrayal that makes it so rewarding when trust is returned in kind.Candidates announced for EVE's sixth CSM (Massively)Over the past few years, EVE Online's Council of Stellar Management has been making an increasingly large impact on the game. Every year, thousands of players vote in the CSM elections to select nine volunteers who can represent the interests of EVE's players. The council's job is to collect together details of issues players are having with the game, from bugs and balance issues to widely supported gameplay suggestions. Twice per year, the council members meet with CCP's developers in Iceland for the CSM Summit. It's here that the issues players have raised are discussed and prioritised.EVE Evolved: Losing yourself in EVE Online (Massively)Of all the things EVE Online has to offer, exploration is perhaps its most attractive lure. With around 7500 solar systems to visit and seven years of history enshrined amongst them, EVE offers players a very real and tangible universe to explore. There's something inherently attractive about getting lost in the depths of space and being absorbed into the stories woven around those thousands of little points of light on the map. While the official storyline of most MMOs can be seen all across their respective worlds, the sandbox nature of EVE adds significant player-determined influences to the usual developer-created storyline. In the colossal sandbox of New Eden, key battles and events have drenched areas of the game in a player-made lore that's ripe for discovery.EVE Evolved: Storytelling in EVE Online (Massively)Storytelling is a major part of most MMOs, with each game having its own unique back-story and fiction. Fantasy settings like Everquest's world of Norrath have even been made into novels and some original fantasy literature like Lord of the Rings has conversely made its way into the MMO scene. Quests and expansions in an MMO usually lead the character through an interactive story where the player assumes the role of a hero. Although space-borne MMO EVE Online doesn't share that pattern and the the game's storyline doesn't develop during play, storytelling may actually be more important to EVE than it is to its fantasy counterparts. In the same way that EVE lends itself spectacularly to making videos, the EVE community has created some awesome fiction and there are some incredible real stories of in-game events. Combined with the wealth of prime fiction and the regular release of official chronicles, it's clear that storytelling is a big deal in EVE.EVE Evolved: Storytelling in EVE Online, part 2 (Massively)The single-server approach to EVE lends actions inside the game an inherent solidity. When you take over a solar system or dominate the market in a region, there is no second instance or shard in which that didn't happen. It's this continuity more than anything that gives EVE's history inherent worth and makes stories of real events within the game all the more tangible. It's an intoxicating notion that you could, as a single solitary player, form part of the ongoing history of EVE Online and help shape the game to come.EVE Evolved: EVE Online's server model (Massively)Almost any time a discussion about EVE Online comes up, one way or another we end up talking about the server. EVE Online is unique among today's most popular MMOs for its single-server approach. While most MMOs deal with large number of users by starting up large numbers of separate servers with identical game universes, EVE maintains only a single copy of its game universe on a massive cluster of servers. CCP's decision to go with a server model that doesn't use any sharding or instancing whatsoever has had a major impact on in-game activities and how the game has developed.Guide: Basic Decloaking (Jester's Trek)Decloaking is defined as the act of forcing a warp-while-cloaked capable ship out of cloak and tackling it when that ship is in close proximity to a gate after jumping into a new system. It is also the term used when attempting to force out of cloak a non-warp-while-cloaked ship that uses a Prototype Cloaking Device and MicroWarpdrive to increase his chances of evading a gate camp. Four classes of ships are capable of warping while cloaked: Covert Ops, Stealth Bombers, Force Recons (and their T3 super-charged versions), and Blockade Runners. As these are all small ships with fast align times, virtually all successful decloaking is done with interceptors.EVE University celebrates fifth anniversary (Massively)"A unique concept in the universe of EVE, the University was - and remains to this day - one of the few truly altruistic organisations in New Eden, supplying free education in all facets of EVE life to any and all who seek it. From humble beginnings as a place where experienced capsuleers could share their wisdom and experience with a handful of new pilots, the University has grown into a mammoth undertaking. Regularly scheduled lessons, supported by weeks of recorded lesson content and thousands of instructive forum posts alongside hundreds of millions of ISK spent every week provide students with the most comprehensive education that can be found anywhere in New Eden."

EVE Evolved: Eight years of EVE Online (Massively)When EVE launched in 2003, the server could only handle a small number of players gathering together in one place. As the game grew in popularity, CCP eventually began to push against the limitations of current hardware. Rather than release separate instances or shards, CCP held onto the idea of a single-server sandbox and rushed to upgrade the server ahead of player demand. Through continual hardware upgrades and software optimisations, CCP has fought an ongoing war on lag. Recent efforts to combat lag have seen remarkable success, and technology continues to advance ahead of the expansion of EVE's playerbase.Five Handy Tips For Combat In EVE Online (Ten Ton Hammer)Next time you fly an assault frigate or interceptor and have a spare mid-slot, consider plugging in a tracking disruptor with a tracking speed disruption script. This will reduce your target's ability to return fire with turrets, causing them to deal less damage, if they hit you at all. (Note that they will still not help you against missile launchers, drones, or energy neutralizers.)EVE Evolved: Mercenaries, the hired goons of EVE (Massively)The mercenary is another of those professions in EVE that just plain wouldn't work in other MMOs. In a society where everything has a price, you can always pay someone else to do your dirty work and execute your evil plans. Good mercenaries are more than just guns for hire, they're a tight-knit unit of professionals with the skills and experience required to achieve literally any objective.CCP bringing vanity item store, new currency to EVE (Massively)"Each PLEX gives you a bunch of Aurum that you can spend in the virtual goods store. If you don't want to spend Aurum on these vanity items, you can always wait for someone else to do so and then buy it off them for ISK. [...] Items bought in the virtual goods store will be transferable between characters, just like PLEX is today," he explains. One Shots: Line 'em up (Massively)"[This is a screenshot of] TEST Alliance Please Ignore and Goons forming the obligatory conga line while waiting to go shoot a POS."CCP releases EVE Online planetary interaction video tutorial (Massively)The Council Of Stellar Management In EVE Online Ten Ton Hammer) Democracy and drama go hand in hand, even in space. The sixth election for the Council of Stellar Management (CSM) has concluded, and the results announced at Fanfest in Iceland. Predictably, the forum equivalent of a fire immediately broke out across the regular EVE forums, Scrapheap, and the other communication venues that EVE pilots like to use. The hubbub might be a bit overwhelming for new players unfamiliar with the concept, so a general explanation is first in order...EVE's anti-lag Time Dilation concept explained (Massively)Under time dilation, actions in the game such as firing weapons or moving would be slowed down to ensure the queue remains short and so the server stays under its maximum load. Instead of fights becoming laggy and unplayable, the entire battle would go into slow motion and remain responsive. It's no silver bullet with which to kill the lag monster, but time dilation could make massive battles a lot more playable.Eve Online: Audience With The King Of Space (Rock Paper Shotgun)Eve Online player The Mittani is the CEO of Goon Fleet, the single largest corporation in Eve Online, both loved and reviled for its practices which include teaching new recruits to scam other players. As of two weeks ago The Mittani was also voted in as the new Chairman of the Council of Stellar Management, the player-run and player-elected body that CCP liases with with the aim of improving the game. Prior to the announcement of the election results, I caught up with him at the Eve Fanfest for a mammoth interview. Click on through for talk of warfare, intrigue, hatred, propaganda, and why he says Eve Online is a terrible game.EVE Spotlight: An interview with EVE Travel's Mark (Massively)Mark: Basically, my goal with EVE Travel is to find and write about all the various landmarks in EVE. This basically entails my flying around to the far reaches of New Eden and taking lots of pictures, while hoping that the locals don't decide that my ships look tasty. As to how I do it, I have a few ships set up for various tasks. My main go-to is my trusty Buzzard "Professor Science" to get me to most destinations in highsec and lowsec. I use it for its cloaking ability and high speed.EVE TravelWhat a cool site- lots of great screenshots!

MMORPG.com's EVE Online Survivor Guy series 2011 EVE Online: Survivor Guy: Returning to Eve EVE Incarna is fast approaching with developers spending a lot of time touting new features including the Capatin's quarters and much more. In his latest Survivor Guy series, MMORPG.com's Adam Tingle heads back into EVE to see how he does after a year's respite from the game. Check out Survivor Guy: Returning to EVE and then let us know what you think. In the spirit of trying the game afresh, I decided on creating another character – Captain Morrissey shall forever glide motionless through space. One thing that struck me about coming to Eve Online was the difference in character creation. The various factions are described and detailed better, even a handy map shows which start where, and the information that was before hurtled at you like a freight train is now doled out in refined terms. Choosing to be a part of Gallente tribe and heading for the warrior type race I set about sculpting a rather magnificent looking avatar. I shaped the eyebrows to a satisfying point, I added a scar that said “I’m mean yet approachable” and also chiselled the strongest jaw you will ever see – looking back at my online-self I looked like a space fairing Charlton Heston; I needed more flab if it was to be a true portrayal of yours truly.EVE Online: Survivor Guy: Returning to Eve Online Part 2 EVE Incarna is fast approaching with developers spending a lot of time touting new features including the captain's quarters and much more. In his latest Survivor Guy series, MMORPG.com's Adam Tingle heads back into EVE to see how he does after a year's respite from the game. Check out Survivor Guy: Returning to EVE Part 2 and then let us know what you think.I entered into the “Recruitment” chat channel and immediately I was hit with a colourful barrage of adverts and requests. Did I want PvP one would ask while another demanded my services as a miner in Gallente space – perhaps I wanted to indulge in piracy or part-take in a learning flight program? Choices, choices, and more damn choices. This particular chat tab within Eve Online is reminiscent of an ancient middle-eastern bazaar – there is a lot of shouting, some angry cursing, and a lot of desperate sellers all trying to peddle the same thing but branded ever so slightly different – I was simply a passing tourist window shopping and trying not to get wrangled in with their patter.EVE Online: Survivor Guy: Returning to Eve Online Part 3 MMORPG.com's resident Survivor Guy isn't finished with EVE Online yet as part 3 of his Returning to Eve Online jets into the column line-up. Read more of Adam's continuing adventures in the EVE universe. Be sure to tell us some of YOURS in the comments. With panic I right-clicked and opted to warp to the one station in the system with a plan to hide out. Within a few moments I came back to the familiar sight of the hulking structure that was the hub of the galaxy and achingly made my way towards the "dock" button. And then cold fear spread throughout my body. Just as I requested permission to come aboard, a message informed me that my aggression had been noted and I was denied access for a further eight minutes. Oh no. And then the red marked ship appeared on the navigation panel. Oh shit. A rocket came hurtling towards my spacecraft and melted my shield away with ease - a second one started an impressive orange blaze. I didn't even see the third one, my ship was destroyed with all of three hits and I was reduced to a shell of former "Merlin" marauding glory. I dared to dream, I dared to punch above my weight, and now here I was, a pod person, I would be crying if it wasn't for the insurance policy I had just taken out on my Arthurian wizard ship. Party time!EVE Online: Returning to EVE Online Part 4 EVE Incarna has finally arrived and developers are spending a lot of time touting new features including the Capatin's quarters and much more. In the latest installment of his Survivor Guy series, MMORPG.com's Adam Tingle heads back into EVE continuing his adventures in space. Check out Survivor Guy: Returning to EVE Part 4 and then let us know what you think.Whilst I sat in the kitchen munching my own body weight in snacks, a call had gone out to my AFK avatar, asking why my, what appeared to be remains, were littering the outside of a station. I didn't answer. The call went out again. No answer. At this point the corporation surmised that I was attacked, killed, and subsequently either "rage quit" or went away to sob quietly in a corner, destroyed that my friends had failed me and now I was an impotent pod person. Crying slowly I wasn't, eating jam off a spoon I was.

The Largest Video Game Battle in Historywww.youtube.com/watch?v=BzdKnFQklvAInside the Epic Online Space Battle That Cost Gamers $300,000 (Wired)The Battle of B-R5RB was the largest and bloodiest in the history of warfare. More than 20 million soldiers were killed and more than 600 warships—some of them kilometers long and capable of destroying lesser vessels with a single shot—destroyed in a battle that raged for 22 hours.
At issue was a distant space station, a small but vital staging area that may be a turning point in a war that has since October pitted two massive alliances in a fight for galactic supremacy.
This battle occurred within the virtual world of the popular roleplaying game Eve Online, yet it required the careful planning, ruthless determination and good fortune of, say, the invasion of Normandy.
That so epic a fight could happen in a digital realm underscores how engaging online gaming can be. Players find the virtual realm of a game like Eve no less fascinating than real life, and they often forge lasting friendships in a gaming experience unlike any other. Though it was just a game, the 7,548 people who fought the Battle of B-R could not have taken it any more seriously—and not simply because they lost virtual ships worth more than $300,000 in real-world money fighting it.
And it all started when someone forgot to pay the rent on a space station. The Bloodbath of B-R5RB, Gaming’s Most Destructive Battle Ever (EVE Community)In the universe of EVE Online, players from every timezone around the globe have been waging wars on a massive scale for nearly 11 years. Some conflicts have been relatively small grudge matches between rivals from adjoining solar systems with maybe a dozen or so frigates and cruisers facing off in fast-paced combat. Others, like the Great War, are fueled by tens of thousands of players and blossom with all the same propaganda, diplomacy (and espionage), supply-chain logistics and military tactics that might fuel a real-world conflict, taking months to resolve and changing entire industrial patterns across the star map.
In all that time one kind of ship has always been the most coveted target for any fleet, thirsted after for the glory of defeating it as evidenced by this recording of the first one to die in combat.
Titans, the largest ship class in EVE Online, take thousands of man hours to produce, take months to train to fly, and are capable of fitting massive doomsday weapons that obliterate lesser ships with a single volley.

Sometimes I wish I had played EVE. It seems like it would have been really cool. I suppose I still could, but from my understanding, you need to have gotten in on the beginning to really thrive in the game today. I guess I could buy an old account.
