GDC10: An in-depth look at Black Prophecy (Massively)

Unlike EVE and STO, Black Prophecy is more of a straight-up action game along the lines of classic space dogfighter games like X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter and Wing Commander. It might be easiest to think of this as a "FPS in space," as the game will reward those with skill, reflexes and nerves of steel. If you're looking to jump into quick battles without a lot of downtime, this might be the game for you.

Black Prophecy's universe relies on a standard instance system. Pilots will congregate in larger areas to socialize and form groups, with these areas capable of holding between 150 and 200 ships at a time. From there, you'll head into missions that are instanced for just you and your team, or missions that are open instances for anyone doing the same task. Travel time to these missions is negligible; pilots are teleported there instantly and then urged to get right into the thick of things.

Combat-wise, Black Prophecy is a twitch game through and through. Depending on your gaming preferences, you can handle the action with a controller, keyboard and mouse, or even a flight stick. Views in the game include a third-person camera, a cockpit camera, and a first-person camera (with no cockpit dashboard).

MMORPG.com's Garrett Fuller had the chance to take a look at the upcoming space-themed MMO Black Prophecy. Garrett found a game with some epic space combat and some new features set to expand the space MMO genre. Read on for a quick look at Black Prophecy.

Players can run missions in Black Prophecy in a solo, group, or clan format. Clans are similar to guilds. The areas that are open to PvP also have a large PvE presence so players are not only fighting each other they are also fighting NPCs throughout the zone. Not only will the Genides and Tyis be impacted in these combats, but there are other alien groups as well to battle it out with. It also seems like the space MMOs have the most vicious PvP combat. Black Prophecy looks to add to this tradition.

It is clear when flying around in the game that range and aim is critical to you doing well in combat. The combat is very much like a dogfight style and kept us on the edge of our seats while playing. With loads of customization and solid space combat, Black Prophecy was a fun game to take a look at. Right now as beta testing continues in Europe, we can only hope to get the game over to U.S. audiences to try it out.

The environmental objects in the game set the mood and develop the universe's setting. From space docks to eateries to adult entertainment districts, Black Prophecy builds a believable society within the game. It's not all about blowing stuff up and exploration can be an enjoyable treat within the game. To illustrate further, Hermann then took us to an icy galaxy where all the asteroids and planets were packed in closely and he navigated through the crystalline galaxy. It was breathtaking, but also very dangerous as it was easy to see how one could get lost and end up in a collision or worse.

Even though Tyi and Genide ships may look completely different, the technical specifications of their components are the same. In general, a space-worthy ship is built of the following components:

* Cockpit
* Left and right wing
* Left and right engine

These components can also be added:

* Up to four normal weapons
* A rocket launcher with up to two rockets
* A shield generator

Black Prophecy crafting detailed (Massively)

In addition to modular ship-building, Black Prophecy also features a traditional crafting system for ship and station components. The game boasts three resource types: metal, plasma, and gas. Metals, as you'd expect, make up modules and weapons, whereas plasma serves as the crafter's source of power. Gas is required for high-performance computer production and for the ubiquitous hyperspace drives. All three resources can be salvaged from space junk as well as procured from successful missions.

Black Prophecy wins "Best of Free-to-Play" at Gamescom (Massively)

Gamigo and Reakktor Media received top honors in the free-to-play category for Black Prophecy, beating out several other nominees including Battlestar Galactica Online and Mytheon, another Gamigo game.
