When I started out, my goal was to get hold of The Sims 2 and it's many expansions to reinstall on my wife's recently reloaded PC. I have a box I keep all my games in to keep things organized.
As I dug through it to find all the boxes for my re-installation, I come to realize that all those games.. they're all sitting there, looking at me like friends I haven't called up for a while and some memories start washing over me.
There's the original Sims, and it's expansion "Unleashed"... There's all the GTA games from III on through to IV (III, Vice City, San Andreas, and IV) which reminded me of the many virtual lives I've squished, shot, run over, robbed and beat up in my long running history with that brand. Digging further I find Hexen and Fallout (A few of those) which I borrowed from a friend, but never returned and never got around to playing!
There's what looks to be at least 3 or 4 copies of Diablo II and it's Expansion that wore out at least two mice and no doubt created a good portion of my carpel tunnel syndrome. Ultima Online: Renaissance (Which I tried to install a little while ago and was amazed to find that it still worked!), there's the handbook for the Ruins of Kunark and a cloth map for Ultima V (Not that I really needed the map, I played IV so obsessively on my Commodore 64 that I knew the land by heart).
Dark Age of Camelot shines out from the pile, bringing back a flood of great memories. Would you believe I actually started Popo with the full intention of annoying everyone I possibly could In Character? He didn't really change TOO much from when I first created him, but instead he became very loyal (Like a good puppy) and made a lot of friends. Did you know Popo originally had a sister that was played by my ex-wife?
Anyway... The list goes on.. In here is Lord of the Rings Online, Horizons, Earth and Beyond, Neverwinter Nights 1 and 2, and my last attempt at a modern MMO, Conan, the Hyborean Adventures which I stopped playing for two reasons. One, it was too slow on my machine and Two, my wife couldn't play it with me (Her machine is slower and older then mine).
There's Planetside, Neocron, both Stronghold games, Dungeon Siege I and II, both of which I've never solved but recall that I enjoyed. There's Sim City 4 with it's Rush Hour expansion... City Life, Homeworld and Legends of Might and Magic. A few lesser known games are in here too.. Ghost Master, where you play the role of a Spiritual Guild leader and your tasks are to frighten people out of their homes and businesses; a tounge in cheek game, not gore and slashing people up. There's Diggles, a german title that I distinctly recall stopping playing because the animated sequences between the puzzles were horribly dubbed, had more pauses then a Narcoleptic drinking RedBull and was too slow for my old PC causing FPS lag which irritated me.
Over there are both Black and White games, including the expansion for Black and White 2 which I never got around to installing. There's Roller Coaster Tycoon (The Original) and #3 (With both Wild and Soaked Expansions).
I could go on, I suppose, but the point is that I look at this bin of games and realize that there's a life's worth of memories in there. Obsession could be another word for it. I've got a lot of history tied up in that box. That box spans the gambit of two marriages, the birth of my son, a few dogs and cats and at least four different homes. This box doesn't even include my Commodore 64 games that have long since vanished (Along with the C-64) or my box of Amiga games (Which have also gone to the dump). Nor even my Atari 2600 collection! (Safely ensconced over in my parent's basement)
I've been doing this for a while and I miss all the free time I used to have to spend in frivolous pursuits. Now I have bills, a child, stress and a third shift job. I sometimes really miss my youth Hey look! There's my D&D books! There the Original Red Box Basic Set and there's the...... * fades into a quiet gibbering ramble *
