WoW's 5th anniversary: Our writers' memories (WoW.com)
I played WoW for over a year, and the first year I liked the game- it was very polished at release and the PvE was well-done. There was even some open-world PvP back before the battlegrounds got started. Never liked the cartoony characters, but the stylized landscapes were neat. The biggest drawback of WoW for me was the lack of community- I had left DAoC to come to WoW, and it was a very noticeable lack. I enjoyed leveling up to 60 on my Paladin, but the endgame was not for me. There were good times in the guilds I was in: the Compass of Rillen, and the Traveler's League. Jaema and Reynald leveled up in perhaps 7 months of active play as a duo. There was even a bit of RP there (see some of the WoW threads on this board).
It's easy to trash WoW- it was the beginning of the end of the old-school MMO as I knew it- but I won't deny that it did some things well and was a huge success. It is not my idea of the perfect MMO by far, but what is these days...
The auction house. I had a few stacks of Linen Cloth in my bags. I had been selling it to vendors for what amounted to a wink and a smile. Upon discovering the auctioneers in Undercity, I thought I might check to see what other people were selling it for. Then I viciously undercut those people. The next time I logged in, I had my first gold piece waiting for me in my mailbox. I'm pretty sure I blew it on something stupid. Don't pretend you didn't do the same thing with your first gold piece. Hypocrite.
