<< I believe this was written after I came back to Haven after a bit of burnout and during one of Haven's big splits. I don't recall 100% >>
Popo woke up early from his spot someplace out in the woods near Drium Ligen. As he stretched and tried to bend the kinks out of his back he let loose a great yawn, only to be unceremoniously drenched by the rain-soaked trees above him stirring in a strong wind.
He muttered quietly and plopped down under the tree, still feeling quite miserable. He felt very alone, despite Haven's presence.
"Popo sicka bein' sad... Popo sicka bein' 'lone 'gain. Alla Popo's friends is gone bye bye, leavin' Popo wif nobody."
He dropped his head on his knees and began to tear up again when a voice spoke from behind him.
"Is no 'lone, Popo..." said the voice
Popo blinked, the voice was familiar, and yet so very strange. It perked only at the back of his mind, and there it only lit a small spark. He did not raise his head but something inside of him trembled and he began to weep again.
The voice became more real as a soft, gentle hand was laid to rest on his shoulder. The wrinkled and elderly hand of a Lurikeen gave his shoulder a soft squeeze and a familiar scent met Popo's nose. The smell of the deep waters and sandy beaches of Connla, Popo's home. He stopped sobbing and it rolled it's way down to a gentle cry now and he shook his head, wiping his eyes on his crossed arms over his knees.
"Is never 'lone, lil Popo... I's here.. n' is gonna be here for long long time. Precious lil Popo.. Will no lookie me?"
The hand on his shoulder was joined by another and he was wrapped up tightly in a caring and warm embrace, gently rocking him back and forth. A lock of grey hair fell across Popo's cheek and he looked up into the face of it's owner.
"Mammy?" he stammered quietly, "Is really Mammy?"
Popo's mother nodded slowly, a tear falling down her gently smiling face.
"Is" was all she said
Popo's sadness was overwhelmed by new tears, tears of joy for seeing his mother. Her face was weather-worn and showed signs of her age, yet the spark of life glimmered within the shadowed eyes. He wept and leapt up, nearly knocking her to the ground in his haste. She held him fast and kissed the top of his head
"Popo, do no be sad, Mammy n' Pappy bof heard Luri Wrenne talkin' to Popo.. n' What she said is right. Sumtimes, people gots leave. Is no my precious lil Popo's fault, is just is. Sumtimes, we goes 'way but is never really gone. So long as Popo 'members them, is no gone forever."
"But Mammy, how hear? Onny Pappy is gone pas'.... " his words fell short there and he looked at his mother with all the love a child can muster for their parent.
"Popo is right wifout sayin' anything..." She held fast to his shoulders and held him at arms length, tears still trickling down her cheeks. "Mammy is gone pas' veil now.. I'm sorry that I left so soon, precious lil Popo.. You n' Marygold were born so quicky fast n' Mammy was so young. I hadta run 'way. Can Popo forgive?"
The silence was as thick as any fog that could be mustered as the two regarded one another for a moment. Popo hung his head and sighed.
"Popo is sowwy did no come n' see Mammy more.. Was bad Luri for doin'..."
"No no, lil one. You did what I did, you left n' learned n' you've grown all big n' strong. You've done what Mammy could no do. Was strong, is brave, is Popo, Popo Bumbleroot. Is no odder Luri could be prouder of Popo then me."
Popo blinked back tears and lifted his gaze to meet hers. He puffed out his chest and a smile came to his lips.
"I's Popo Bumbleroot, Lil Luri Zot-Maker!"
He raised his staff over his head n' cried out with glee as he looked to the heavens above.
"I'S POPO! YAY FOR LURI!"
Popo giggled and dropped his gaze once more to where his mother was. He saw only the trees and grass around him. He looked to the left and to the right but could not find her. Finally he sighed with content and smiled, looking back up to the parting clouds overhead.
"n' Yay for Mammy..." he said quietly before turning and running off to find the rest of Haven.
