The fact that more and more games release without an official RP server bears this distressing theory out.

It's an unfortunate fact, MMO's have moved from niche online experiences to big business. When Everquest first came out, people had never seen anything like it. Old School RPG fans suddenly had their passion turned into a 3d environment and better still, there were other REAL PEOPLE to interact with! How cool was that?
Then people in the business world started to see the potential in it and now there's a website you can go to and get a list of literally HUNDREDS of online experiences ranging from free to micro-payment to monthly fees to paid-once-paid-forever schemes. In the wake of this, the need to satisfy those who originally sought an interactive RPG experience got lost in the shuffle as the dollar became the driving force behind the games, not the players.
