Help the Massively Overpowered crew reroll, go independent, and continue to cover the vibrant MMO games market.

Since 2007, gamers have been relying on Massively.com to deliver independent news and editorials about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying game (MMORPG) genre. But in early 2015, in spite of the site's strong and diverse audience and traffic, our corporate overlords decided to sunset the profitable Joystiq network and other enthusiast blogs, jettison the veteran staff with little notice, and archive our 20,000+ articles.

The former Massively crew is not giving up so easily. We provided a unique lens through which to view MMORPGs, with diligent editorial oversight, honest opinions, and truly independent coverage, and we did so sustainably. We'd like to keep on doing what we were doing only better, not just because we love MMO blogging but because we know that our community and the greater MMO fandom is unique and worth serving.

Now we're turning to our readers and fans and the genre itself to ask whether or not this is something you love and want as badly as we do. If it is, we will deliver it to you from our new MMO site: Massively Overpowered on massivelyOP.com.

Massively’s Closure – This one really hurts…

First, let me start with the easiest and most obvious thing to say. Thank you, Massively, for your eight years of coverage on our corner of the games industry. We haven’t always agreed, and yes, at times we have thought the other one was, well, flat-out wrong. Yet, through all this time, Massively treated everybody the same. It didn’t matter if you were Mark Jacobs, John Smedley, Richard Garriott, Scott Hartsman, Brad McQuaid, etc., etc., etc., or some unknown guy working from his basement (as I certainly once was). Massively gave you both coverage, attention, and yes, the occasional bit of rotten fruit hurled in your direction. And for all of that—the good, the bad, and the meh—I and every other damned MMO developer should be grateful, especially nowadays. In case those in the cheap seats or in the rarified upper crust of development haven’t noticed, there aren’t a lot of sites that are devoted to MMOs, especially not in the way that Massively was, on so many levels. So again, THANK YOU SO VERY, VERY MUCH!

It took only 2 days for Massively Overpowered to reach their Kickstarter goal of $50,000 dollars with just over 1,000 people contributing!

I pledged a little to help them out too. I really only read their stuff based on what you posted here, but I feel like it's an important enough site that it still needs to be up and running.

Agreed! I really think there's a need for a one-stop site to get all MMO based news. If it weren't for Massively I wouldn't have known about several games that I've followed.

Last night, 12 hours into an insane streamathon, our 28-day Kickstarter to fund Massively Overpowered’s reroll drew to a close with some of our very dearest friends and supporters and readers joining in for the party. It seems that 1665 of you really kinda like us, MMOs, or both; you smashed through our Kickstarter goal and our core stretch goal, funding us to 152% at $75,938. There are insufficient words to express our gratitude. In most of the successful Kickstarters we cover, backers are more or less preordering a game — they’re getting a thing for themselves. But our backers were donating to a dream and a legacy. We know how very much more we were asking than the typical crowdfund, and we won’t forget who poured the foundation of this house.

We’ve got a lot of work to do, but it’s gratifying to work hard when we know you’ve got our backs.
