the beta for this thing just consumed my weekend. I really like it despite the console window dressing. The matchmaking is superb, the game's very balanced and fun and diverse even with the tiny slice of beta content, and there's lots of persistent leveling to get into.
(Evolve is a 4v1 game from the Left 4 Dead dev coming out next month. The basic concept is a L4D versus-mode tank fight taken to the extremes of competitive replayability)
It really brings back the men-vs-monster thrill of Giants Citizen Kabuto 10 years ago, and there's something for everyone- I mostly play monster for the all-or-nothing rush of wrecking 4 people by myself while my friend never goes monster and loves the team interdependency play

Evolve official siteEvolve (Wikipedia)Evolve is an upcoming asymmetrical, cooperative/competitive shooter video game, developed by Turtle Rock Studios and published by 2K Games. The game will be released for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One on February 10, 2015.
Evolve is an asymmetrical multiplayer game, pitting four player-controlled Hunters against an alien Monster, controlled by a fifth player. Both Hunters and Monsters can use unique abilities during the game. The Monster player can kill other smaller creatures to evolve and become stronger by entering a cocoon stage, leaving itself vulnerable for a short duration. The game will feature a variety of maps, one of which being a large jungle, with some industrial elements where players can take shelter. There are various power-ups that both Hunters and Monsters can obtain by killing the local wildlife. The Hunters are tasked with killing the Monster; while the Monster must either kill all four Hunters, or complete a secondary objective such as destroying a human base or power plant. The Hunters' team is always made up of four classes: a trapper, a support, a medic, and an assault class. Each class will contain a variety of different Hunters with different abilities and play-styles. The Monster player will also be able to choose from a variety of monsters; so far, only four of these monsters have been revealed, including "Goliath", "Kraken", "Wraith" and "Behemoth".Evolve is on Steam- Evolve (Steam)

yea that team structure is pretty innovative- everyone has degrees of utility and damage-dealing instead of the standard tank/dps/support archetypes. But the classes don't blend together and everyone has a distinct, crucial role to play. Just finding the monster and engaging it on favorable terrain takes up a big chunk of the team's capabilities too

I was thinking about buying it.
But I couldn't bring myself to pay $60 for a game with essentially one game mode and a couple maps. Nor one that I have to pay $100 to get the "full game" because of day 1 DLC.
Looks like it would be really fun too, but after watching some people play it I figured I would be bored of it after 10 hours. Playing as the monster was the only part that really interested me too, and it sounded like you couldn't choose 100% of the time. Can you be the monster always, or no?

no, unless you do an unranked (probably non-XP) custom game, you set your priorities for the 5 positions for matchmaking. I had monster set as #1 and only got it about half the time. Got my #3 pick a couple times and never #4 or 5
there are a couple other modes than the straight Hunt and the range of character match-ups offers some variety (a team with Lazarus vs a Wraith plays very differently from a Val team vs a Goliath), but yea it's less than most games and the DLC is gonna be terrible

Wow, that looks like a lot of fun. I think they may end up with the same problem that modern MMOs have with their servers though. Instead of everyone wanting to play Alliance, and there being no Horde to fight against, everyone is going to want to play the big monster, and there aren't going to be any hunters. LOL

playing monster is stressful! My friend had monster as lowest priority during beta and still got it a couple times because premade teams try to avoid it Polygon posted a pretty critical review; www.polygon.com/2015/2/9/8003383/evolve-review-xbox-one-PS4-PCThey're right about chases being frustrating, especially with a mediocre team against an expert monster. I used to play Tribes a ton so I guess I just love jet-packing around. We only got to play Hunt during beta... One of the monsters was too powerful during beta and had a 72% win rate. They fixed the same problem earlier with another monster and posted great adjustment patch notes for this one, but the careless balance worries me. There's a DLC monster coming out for $15 in a couple weeks, wonder what its initial win rate will be...

I hope they don't screw things up. It seems like they have a potential good thing going.

first significant balance patch finally released a couple days ago. There's still a lot of bugs and exploits and the balance still feels off with a few characters, but I've been having a blast yesterday & today talk.turtlerockstudios.com/t/pc-patch-1-3/48299just in time for 5 new, publicly untested characters to come out early next week...
