The Daily Grind: How do you diverge from conventional MMO wisdom? (Massively)
I was reading some forum reviews of ArcheAge recently, and had I not played it extensively myself, I would have come away with the impression that it's a grindy gankfest with crappy combat and a hacker infestation so vast that it's actually unplayable. Needless to say, I disagree with all of those assertions.
Similarly, most if not all of my MMO-playing friends and co-workers swear by Guild Wars 2's combat. It's so fluid and actiony, they say, to which I usually smile, nod, and think, if it really was all that, I probably would've played the game for more than a week! I'm likely in the minority on that one, though, which leads into today's Daily Grind.
How do you diverge from what passes as conventional MMO wisdom?
I'm a fan of the trinity (tank, DPS, healer) when it seems the trinity is unfashionable these days. Actually I'm in favor of the quaternity- tank, DPS, healer, and crowd control- the latter is a big deal to me. Unfortunately, the conventional MMO wisdom sees the trinity as unfashionable and standing in the way of anyone relying upon anyone else, which is heresy these days. My problem with this is that with no trinity, group gameplay tends to devolve into a DPS zerg with no strategy whatsoever. Crowd control would help assuage this but CC seems to be a bit passe too.
Anyway, just call me a stodgy defender of classes that have unique strengths and weaknesses and necessarily interact with each other. I'll admit the one drawback is not being able to find a healer or tank sometimes. But DPS zergs masquerading as group fights is a snorefest to me. Might as well solo.
