I solo in MMOs now and I have nothing against it, but I think soloing should take longer to accomplish things than grouping because in general it is easier to do (and actually, I wouldn't mind seeing soloing get more challenging). No forced grouping, but grouping should have advantages, like group experience bonuses so players would level faster, and the ability to get better loot. In other words, give incentives to group, but do not require grouping.
I fear what would happen in this situation would be that soloers would say this discriminates against them. I've seen soloers saying that they should have every opportunity that groups and even raids have now. I disagree, because forming a group or running a raid takes much more work and coordination than soloing, and should gain players something more than what they could accomplish alone. But soloing is the default playstyle these days, and will probably be catered to more and more by devs.
I solo much of the time, but I will say this- that my best memories from MMOs come from interacting with other people when I was in groups or even raids. A collection of soloers running by each other as if other players were NPCs is a bloodless experience to me, when it's all said and done. Just don't make doing this more rewarding or just as rewarding as grouping or raiding, which takes more effort.
Thoughts?
