Only 2.2% of free-to-play users ever pay - Report (GamesIndustry International)...Swrve tracked the habits of 10 million new players on 30 games in its network over the course of 90 days, finding that only 2.2 percent of those players ever spent money. The spending of monetized players wasn't spread evenly, as Swrve found 46 percent of revenue came from just 10 percent of that group, or .22 percent of the total player base.
Beyond the monetization concerns, the report also speaks to how difficult it is to retain players. Two-thirds of the tracked users quit playing their games within a day of downloading them. Further pushing the idea that early monetization is key, 53 percent of user spending happened within the first seven days after downloading a game.

This doesn't surprise me, I've spent about $10 in my lifetime on free-to-play and I've never picked up anything from a cash shop so I can believe 2.2%. I can't say I'm surprised about the revenue coming from a very small user base either. Interesting what Swrve does: www.swrve.com/Swrve is a single, integrated platform for driving mobile engagement and monetization within mobile apps

I think I have only ever purchased one item from a cash shop before. It was something cosmetic I think. If I have to pay to get ahead, then I won't play. I have downloaded several games where I have only played it once and uninstalled it. It's kind of the good thing about F2P, you can try it out. I look at beta invites to bigger games that same way. I didn't use to, but now that I have less time to play, beta invites are great. Then I know whether or not to spend my money on it.

I'd be interested to see how these figures differ between a Blood & Jade turd of the week and a quality, long-lived F2P like LoL. A higher % of players paying lower amounts?

I agree with your thoughts on LoL. But LoL is sort of a successful freak like WoW, it's hard to see more than one of its kind being that huge to become a cultural icon. It's like talking about MMOs and acknowledging that WoW is the exception because nothing else comes even close!

well DOTA2 (if that counts as a different game) or TF2 (if that counts as F2P)

LoL is great, Oatik. Let me know if you try it, maybe we can game together. I have some friends that play regularly and I jump in every now and then. Just so you know, it can be frustrating to learn how to play. However once you get the hang of it, it's awesome.
