City of Steam Beta Impressions (Ten Ton Hammer)
City of Steam is a browser-based free-to-play. Its hub city of Nexus is broken into multiple zones where players pick up quests that take them into specific dungeons. There is no common adventuring area and all your quests will be instanced, with the exception of those that require you to meet a specific NPC.
Starting off, there are four classes--Arcanist, Warder, Gunner, and Channeler--and ten races to choose from. Each class also has three combat specialties that you determine at character creation. The amount of character customization is pretty limited to some choices for hair style and an accessory (goggles or various hats).

Instead I found myself on a long main quest sequence to open the Sky Dock. I'm running around saying I'm helping the recovery effort while actually following a secret agenda of my own dictated to me by someone I don't know and can't see, who is talking to me on an ancient artifact I found. It's all very mysterious and quite relentless.
City Of Steam Beta Bringing Tons Of New Content (GotGame)
First off the team has put in an actual story line for the tutorial. During the closed Beta this was available, but since that it’s been improved. You start off in your home town on the day a beast called the Songbreaker is terrorizing the town. The Colossus, a giant mechanical being, activates itself to defend against the imminent threat. Meanwhile you’re trying to get your way out of the city and onto a rail hauler which will take you to Nexus. At one point during your escape to the rail hauler you get to see the mighty Colossus and Songbreaker in an epic battle while fire rains down all around you.
