I've got a nice little town going now, plenty of resources, population seems balanced. I'm just shy of 500 people in about year 63. I've let about the last 5 years go by without really doing much and things seem fine right now. I was lucky to get past the Great Tool Shortage of '39.
I'm on a medium map and have about 1/3 still empty, I'm a little afraid to change things up right now.

My wife had a similar problem, Dort. She got rid of some of the extra buildings that weren't being used (homes, professions, etc.) and it seemed to help people come to the town. It's like she had too much dead weight lying around. I don't know if it was just coincidence or not. *shrugs*Also, she had something like 47 nomads show up one time. She's got a 100 year-old town right now with over 250 people. It's really thriving. I think my oldest is 40 something with maybe 50 people. Then again, I play with disasters on, she doesn't.

I know, I know... Bit of a necrobump here. . Just picked up Banished yesterday evening and while enjoy the game, the constant crashing on my XP machine is making me cry! I thought that perhaps by putting it on my Win 7 laptop, things would get better. It doesn't crash so much, but has these strange momentary slowdowns that are irksome. Admitedly, this laptop isn't really a gaming laptop, but still! Argh! Anyway! I don't think I've made it past year 12 yet before my population is all too old for children and they slowly die off. I might have figured it out though by adding new, empty houses every so often when the kids grow up, that seems to be helping. I find myself turning builders off and on a lot to the number it says I need, is that normal or am I over managing? It seems that when I do that, areas get harvested quicker then if I leave it be. I find myself building too fast too soon as well, which always seems to plague me in games like this. Overall, aside from the crashes at home and the lags at work, I still am enjoying it. I was right when I said it's Simcity meets Settlers, it has that same kind of feel to it. Hopefully I'll soon have stories to match your own as I keep learning the tricks of the trade

I find myself building too fast too soon as well, which always seems to plague me in games like this. That's the same problem I have. I get ahead of myself, then I end up with lots of empty lots. This game is all about balance. Sometimes your population grows too fast, sometimes not fast enough. If your population is too old, then you are on the right track by building new homes for them. They won't reproduce while living in their parents' homes. Try to keep no more than three or four families per home if you're trying to expand the people. They'll start having kids around age 13 unless you have them going to school. Start out with only building the essentials, such as homes, foresters, smiths, tailors, hunters, gathers, and so on. Once your population is stable, and you're ready for a bigger increase, build a town hall. That will allow you to get nomads, which will help grow your population. As far as the problems you're having with the crashes, trying downloading the newest patches. If you got the game from Steam, I'm assuming the patches came with the download. However if you downloaded it directly from the site, you may have to go back and download the patches too. The creator has fixed a lot of issues that were plaguing the game.

about ten hours into this still trying to scrape through a Hard start. I just had a dream all my villagers were throwing themselves off cliffs with 0.5 happiness.
What game speed do most people play on? 1x is so slow but I'm worried about something terrible sneaking up if I go faster

It's been a while since I played but I often played on regular speed. Speeding up is tempting but I found out that your population can crash fast (especially when you get up into triple digits) and you're like WTF?

I seem to recall that 2X was as fast as I wanted to go- the first time your population crashes at 3X or 5X you'll see why

I don't play much anymore, usually just hop on for a bit if my net goes down or something I've been working on the Tenure achievement, and run at 10x usually, or 5x if I notice my food stores dropping excessively. I have something like 15+ Trading Posts and massive amounts of Woodcutters Basically trade for all my food, although I do have a lot of Fishing, some farming, and some pastures. Most of my food comes from trade though. Not sure what my current population is, 1200ish maybe. I've done most of the achievements except a couple.
