One of my favorite things about Vanguard was how far you could see into the distance, which made for some great views and extra screenshots The level of detail in distant objects was good (I always tried to have the graphics on max) and it added to the size and scope of the large world. I always enjoyed being on a mountaintop or other great height and looking around. Here's the Isle of Dawn in 2010- the level of detail is degraded somewhat from the original 1440x850 image, which is one of my favorite screenshots from Vanguard.

I lost all of my Vanguard images when my hard drive crashed. My favorite was me looking down from a mountain precipice into a valley containing a large castle with dragons flying over it.

That's horrible, Kul! Was it this image, by any chance? Sorry I don't have it saved directly, this is a crop from the old Traveler's League Vanguard guild page (which is gone now) that I saved as a PDF, apologies for the quality. Let me know if you lost other game images, I have some you sent me or may have posted on guild sites- I could send copies back.

I never played Vanguard past beta. I don't know what it was about the game, but I just couldn't get into it. Maybe it was all of the RvR I was doing in DAoC at the time (it was that or WoW, I can't remember which).

I understand that- games are rather personal to me on whether I like them or not. For instance, EQ2 is great on paper to me, it has huge amounts of content and zones and races, but for some reason it just didn't 'click' with me when I tried it a few times. Part of it was the art direction, although there were a couple of really cool zones; I really liked collections...it's hard to pin down sometimes. It is probably aesthetic, though there are some mechanics that also come into play, and putting the whole thing together adds up to a 'I like' or a 'ehh, not quite'.
Compounding this decision on whether we like a game or not is where we are at that particular time, what game we have been playing recently if any, our personal lives even, what era we are in- the good old community days? The post-WoW solo/casual days?- it's a complex thing.
Also, when it came to Vanguard, the game was unfinished at release and had serious PC performance issues. I really liked it (despite the technical issues which weren't as bad for me as some others), but I understand why others didn't. The character models were a weakness, but the lush-looking landscapes and environment overrode that for me. My favorite thing about the game is that Vanguard was a huge world with a lot to do, it felt much more like a virtual world to me than many other games. You could build houses in the actual game world, you could build boats to explore the 2 continents and an island chain.
I keep going back to Vanguard every so often to play, and since it has gone F2P that makes it easier. I like the idea of the game more than the reality perhaps, but there's something there that resonates with me.
