REPOST OF A GREAT POST!
I was just having a chat with a guildie about how EASY MMOs have gotten for people over the years.
Back in MY DAY:
1. When you died - you respawned naked, no gear, no weapons - hope you remembered where you died!
2. You had to DRAG your body away to be able to get to a safe spot to loot it again. Can we say raid-wipes in the Plane of Hate anyone?
3. There was an experience penalty with each death
4. You could LOSE a LEVEL by dying. (Un-ding anyone?)
5. There were no ingame maps - you searched the web for the few and far btwn maps that players painstakingly drew for you. You printed them out and referred to them, extra points if they were in a binder with sheet protectors.
6. /Loc was your only method of navigation and if you couldn't figure it out - hehe, have fun finding your way out of Kithicor forest.
7. If you accidentally gave a quest item or a piece of gear to the wrong NPC - there were no warning messages, no buy backs, NO INDIAN GIVING. Have fun camping that item in Lower Guk for your Soulfire again you pansy careless paladin.
8. Areas where you could easily fall to your death, adding to the piles of bodies on the ground below - Kelethin
9. Humans - blind as bats at night.
10. No auction houses - you went to a tunnel, and /shouted about what you were selling until someone bought it, or you gave up. None of this namby-pamby auction house browsing, searching business. You had to work for each sale.
11. NO BAGS on your character when you started.
12. Proximity aggro from other people's trains - woe to the fool who went AFK at a zone line.
13. You respawned where you last were bound - none of this closest camp respawn business. No book of binding to port back to your respawn point whenever you felt like.
14. NO MOUNTS, NO FLIGHT MASTERS, NO NPC PORTERS - you will run everywhere and YOU WILL LIKE IT.
15. No visible quest givers, no flashy icon that says HEY TURN IN YOUR QUEST here. Lets hope you remember who to give it to, cause there ain't no fancy schmancy quest log either.
16. Mobs didnt give up chasing you until you were dead or you crossed the zone line. Which made #12 especially amusing with the shouts of "TRAIN!" echoing through the night.
I find it pretty funny when people today complain about MMOs making things a little hard on a player, like the /stick /face argument for example.
Get off my lawn!
