Amazing.
I had never even given ARMA a first look as a game I would ever buy.
But over the weekend my friend convinced me to pick up the pack on Steam($30) so I could play the new Day Z mod with him. It's still in Alpha and there's bugs, but it's awesome.
The basic idea is you've survived the disaster that causes the zombie apocalypse.
You always spawn near the coast on a 225 square kilometer map(pretty fkn big). From there you want to start scavenging around while being stealthy to avoid aggroing nearby zombies. You'll find things like weapons, food, drink, gear etc. And you'll need these things. You need to eat and drink when those icons start getting red.
Starting with only a pistol, some ammo, a small backpack and some meager supplies, you'll die fast if you don't find better stuff.
Oh, and other survivors can kill you. Or you can help each other. Or maybe just steal from each other if found with pants down
There's also vehicles(rare, very) around that often need to be fixed using parts that you'll find around the map. I've seen the rotor assembly for a helicopter, but never found the helicopter. Lots of tires and other junk like windshields around.
When you die, you're dead. You'll have to respawn randomly along the coast again, from the start. If you're low on health you need to find an animal to kill, gut it, take the meat, chop some wood and make a fire to cook it. Either that or find another player with a blood bag to give you a transfusion.
There's much more, but that's some of it. Your character is also persistent, meaning if you change servers you'll log in exactly where you were on a different server. Servers are usually capped around 20-65 people.
If you get a chance or can buy ARMA II to download the mod(currently free) do it. It's really fun.
Stay away from the big cities unless you absolutely need to go there for supplies. Zombie central
Edit: I'll be streaming some a bit later today/tonight: www.twitch.tv/dortmunder98
You can also see some of the footage of me playing the last couple days in my videos section, or watch another stream on twitch. There's always people streaming it now.
