Origins of Malu official siteNo Classes, No Rules
Prefer to cast spells from a distance or go toe to toe? You decide the character you want to play. Crafting skills allow players to alter the cosmetics of their own attacks and abilities further giving players even more a unique flavor.
Through our unique arcade style of combat, we give players the ability to improve through skill and practice rather than through gear. You are the master of your own fate.
This is just the beginning, much more coming soon!Pre-alpha footage: Origins website hints at lofty sandbox goals (Massively)No classes? Check. The ability to change the game world? Check. A conspicuous lack of scripted boss fights? Check. And would you believe mob AI that stalks players over a period of several days, waiting for the right time to attack?
The world itself seems to be a mixture of fantasy and sci-fi, and the Origins website contains its share of screenshots, concept art, and bestiary info.New Origins sandbox MMO wants your creature concepts (Massively)...the Origins website was recently updated with a new Create a Monster contest, and the lucky winner will get to see his design incorporated into the gameworld (and the lore) of Burning Dog's upcoming MMORPG.Some Assembly Required: Diving into details of Origins of Malu with an exclusive interview (Massively)This game is going to have three distinct factions, each tied to its specific race's lands, and then also a meta faction -- the deserters (who chose not to be a part of any other faction). If players remain within their own faction's lands, they will be safe from any PvP. Whether your playstyle is "carebear" all the time or you just want to take a break and chill, this option removes you from any threat of PvP. Deserters, however, will be permanently flagged to everyone -- even other deserters. There is consensual permadeath! A high risk / high reward zone where you can die for good, and a duel to the death feature. Cool!

New Origins of Malu video highlights story-based sandbox design (Massively)Dunham also explains a bit about the mechanical philosophy behind Origins, stating that "we wanted to build a story-based sandbox game where the user is able to do what they want to do from the beginning [...] it can't be just a complete free-for-all, but at the same time we don't want railroad tracks," he says. Our combat is going to be fairly skill-based and more tactical than a traditional MMO. We have a charge system for spells and abilities. In other MMOs, you press a key and there's probably a casting time; well, in our game, we have this charging mechanic that allows players to generate more powerful spells.
You can hit someone fast with a lighter attack, or you can hold it for a more powerful attack. Environment comes into play too. If you're in a wide-open space, you might have the luxury of charging up a bit more, but if you're in a forested area, your opponents end up taking cover behind trees or other obstacles.PAX Prime 2012: Hands-on with Origins of Malu (Massively)Dunham also gave an interesting example on how players' actions may impact the way they play. Imagine coming across a frightened creature beset by predators. You, being the hero you are, fend them off to save the poor animal's life, after which it chitters appreciatively and scampers off into the wilds. Later on down the road, that critter may repay the kindness when you find yourself in need by helping to fight off some enemies attacking you. If you've truly gained its loyalty, it may even sacrifice itself for you if you find yourself in dire straits.Burning Dog updates Origins of Malu website, beta dates to be announced next week (Massively)The sci-fantasy sandbox title has been in the works for a while now, and the post says that the dev team is committing to weekly website updates as beta approaches.Origins of Malu beta coming March 30, signups in February (Massively)The closed testing period has been moved to March 30th and it will focus on systems, scalability, combat, and faction wars.
