I jumped into WoW on launch in late 2004 and was putting in at least 60 hours a week when I got pulled into an aspiring raid guild in mid 2005. In a few months we were through Molten Core and on the cusp of establishing ourselves as server leaders, among:
Blackwing Lair was much better designed than Molten Core; boss fights were more a matter of skill and coordination than lucky spell resists. Unity and Sovereign had gotten into BWL as soon as it launched and had quickly cleared up to the seventh boss, Chromaggus. But Chromaggus had abilities noone had ever seen before, like line-of-sight AOEs that could one-shot a player. Sov and Unity were frantically jostling each other to see who could kill Chrom and get to Nefarian's throne room first.
Prominence was stuck on the third boss in BWL when one night, somehow, our raid just caught fire. We killed the third, fourth, fifth, and sixth bosses all within a couple hours. It was something like midnight on a Wednesday and we found ourselves facing the borderline of excellence, Chromaggus. We took a quick counsel and decided, yes, we'll push into it as hard as we can right now.
Over the next five or six hours, we wiped twenty or thirty times developing a strategy where Chromaggus was pulled far away to a circular ramp that was used to block line-of-sight (turns out there's a wayyyy easier strategy of just using the wall next to him). Some people quit and lots of people ran out of potions, but we kept trying and trying. Potions and herbs and repair bots were passed out and who had farmed them stopped being important. We had to kill Chromaggus that night and, on one attempt shortly before dawn, we did.
OH and I got the shoulders! Very first Pauldrons of Transcendence on Dragonmaw server. You can see the crappy placeholder graphic Blizz used on a lot of epics back in the day haha
I went on to many more server firsts with Prominence. Prominence and Unity went on to develop a deep and hateful feud that continued at least until I quit WoW a year and a half later. ;D
- Sovereign, the server's very first hardcore guild and first to clear Molten Core. I think they were from EQ1 originally, but they were recently flagging, splitting, and making way for new guilds to seize the crown.
- Unity, with ex-Sov officer Vividorrin at its helm. When Molten Core raids were first cranking up, Sovereign hosted guild coalitions to get enough geared Lv 60s, so Vividorrin designed and managed a pretty elaborate DKP system to decide who would get what. Unity had pulled most of the top talent on the server into its ranks and was looking to be the new undisputed raid leader on Dragonmaw server.
- Prominence, my guild, led by ex-Sov officer Tremain. Tremain commanded the server's very first raids with his unmistakable angry Brit voice. Our guild was starting to really bloom, but our reputation for griefing, profanity, exploits, and general hooliganism prevented us from being considered on par with Unity.
