Guild Wars : 6 Million Copies SoldA very good accomplishment! Sure, Guild Wars is not a traditional MMO- more of a series of instanced hosted zones. But. Compare the success of Guild Wars to 2 other games NCsoft has shut down- Auto Assault and Tabula Rasa. 'But those were FPS-style titles', you say. Yes. But they went down because there was a monthly subscription fee. Guild Wars has no subscription fee- you buy the box and play. You buy periodical expansions (which of course have built-in game incentives to purchase. Expansions always do.) To me, this shows that there is a lot of room for a buy-the-box-and-expansions model without a subscription. FPS players expect this. Maybe it's time that MMO players expect more of this as well.
