In classic DAoC, you had both open RvR and the Battlegrounds when you wanted to fight other players. Both were consensual experiences. The thing about the Battlegrounds in DAoC was, there was no set matches between even sides- anyone could go there at anytime to play, so you didn't know what to expect- much like open RvR, the experience could be quite different. This was often exciting. Every 5 to 10 minutes (I think it was 7 minutes), if you were standing on the magical teleport pad at a designated border frontier location, a group of NPC magicians would come out and teleport you to the Battlegrounds.
Can you imagine having to wait for anything these days? People would complain. However, there were good reasons for this pause in the action. You could form or reform groups while you waited, talk to your guild or alliance to recruit more players, inform others of what was going on, take a needed brief break, and other such things. You would enter the Battlegrounds with others in a wave, not piecemeal. People even roleplayed while waiting. Here are a couple of images of players discussing Glasny (Hibernia) and Master Visur (Albion), lead NPC magicians who would come out of their rooms and teleport us. People would have good-natured fun with them, telling them to hurry it up!
One of the funniest things I remember from Hibernia Nimue was a player imitating Glasny- she looked exactly like the NPC, named herself virtually the same name, and would slowly walk out while players were waiting for teleportation. She'd complain back to the players about how impatient they were, and some people who weren't aware it was an impostor would freak out. What great fun!
I miss such morale-building community experiences. Games these days have zero downtime and feel very rushed. The suspense waiting briefly to go into battle was palpable. There is no reason to do much communicating at all anymore. That's a step backward in my book.
