I know, I've been there before *coughs*Vanguard*coughs*, but give me a minute here
No, I'm not talking GW2 here, though that game looks very intriguing and I will try it. I'm talking about Archeage, a South Korean skill-based sandbox-style MMO in development, with Lineage creator Jake Song heading up development. It's due to release in Asia by the end of this year.
You all know about my pining for virtual worlds, for sandboxes instead of the typical class/level/quest-based theme parks that we've been getting for years now. I'm playing one of them now- Rift, which is a good game. Yet I have a desire to get off the typical treadmill and head back to my UO roots. Archeage might just be that game. Check out the info on it linked above.
My major reasons for thinking why this might be a winner:
1) It has a big budget and a successful developer. Now I am very aware that money and talent alone does not create a good game, but the lack of money certainly makes it hard to have a good, polished product. Sandbox games have been notorious for having too little in the way of funding. Archeage has the big bucks, and it has a veteran crew behind it. A successful dev can't hurt, although I'll admit it doesn't guarantee anything, obviously.
2) It has a big scope. The world is large- I love large worlds!- and you can build houses and place them most anywhere, and build boats to explore the seas. Vanguard had this kind of grand view, which surely beats these small on-the-rails theme park cattle chutes that I'm tiring of.
3) It has all sorts of things to do; it's not just focused on combat, though it does have cool-looking naval and mounted combat systems. Not only the impressive crafting system, but you can grow and harvest trees and crops. This is something I really miss from the old UO days, having plenty of things to do. You can own land, and can have wars over territory with other guilds. Sign me up as a farmer! The bottom line is that Archeage is striving for player-centered content, which has lots of potential.
4) It looks like they are handling PvP well. Sandboxes are infamous for being Lord Of The Flies style free-for-all PvP fests, which appeals to a limited number of gamers. From what I've read, there will be 2 continents for PvE (and perhaps consensual PvP) and one continent for (FFA? Faction?) PvP. This is encouraging to me, showing that they want to appeal to a variety of player types.
So, this is my latest hope- may it turn out well!
