I play on my friend Bob’s server. It’s just me, him and his wife and we like it that way. Plus, it’s running on a home PC, so there’s lag issues to be contended with and more then the three of us could cause alot of problems. The game has evolved quite a bit since we started up this server with a whole new world. As a result, the “new stuff” that’s come into the game after our initial beginnings only shows up when new map terrain is generated. i.e. A new feature was a variety of trees instead of the singular type we originally started with, so to find any of the new trees, we have to move outside of the existing game world so that it can generate new terrain, which includes the new trees. Send me a PM if that didn’t make sense and I’ll try to explain better
Pine is one of these new trees. It’s a lovely, dark colored wood that I find very pretty and have used in some of my constructions previously. I went searching for some of this lovely wood and couldn’t find any of it… anywhere…. They only grow in wintery biomes and it would appear that our world has very few of those I traveled for hours (real time) trying to find these elusive trees. After a while, it was no longer just a bit of a wander to find them. I had taken it as an affront against me that they would hide from me like this. Translation: It got personal… I was going to find these damn trees if it took me all night!
As I was busy digging out a channel / canal across a stretch of sand that was irritating me, I began to hear barking. Wolves are creatures in the game you can tame and take with you as pets. They are also fairly rare and hard to find, so I had to jump at the opportunity to get me one. I got more then I bargained for. I tamed the one and saw another hopping over the hill nearby. So I went and tamed it too. Then I saw more… tamed them as well… By the time I was done, I had a pack of 13 wolves traveling with me! Hell yea!
Me and my wolfies went exploring further and after ANOTHER few hours, came upon a stand of Pine… FINALLY! I erected a sign and lots of torches so that I could mark this momentous occasion! Horray! However; it was getting dark and as anyone who has played Minecraft can tell you, dark is bad…. Very bad…. People die in the dark… Don’t try to harvest trees at night. Dig a hole, hide inside and wait until morning.
So I began to dig out a shelter for my wolfies and I to hunker down in for the night. I usually carry all the necessary tools with me for any situation. Plenty of wood, boards, torches and tools. Some of my standard equipment includes a Workbench, a Furnace and since their implementation, a bed to fast forward through the night and get to the good stuff in the morning. I dig out a huge hole in the ground because it’s hard to get 13 wolves and one Popsy tucked away inside out of the nighttime chill. I finally get enough space for us all and get ready to set down my bed…. Only one problem: No bed… Crap! No wool to make one either, so it’s back to Old School methods and I go to block up the entrance…
SssSSsssssSs… what the?.. * BOOM * Mother f... 7 wolves dead… As I struggle to quickly get torches up to see what the hell’s going on… SSssSsssSSsSs… Ah shi… * BOOM * 2 more wolfies dead and my neat, orderly cave blown all to pieces. I’m at 2 health with scraps for armor, blinded in the dark with no way to know what the hell else it out there! I go into panic mode and start throwing dirt blocks all over the place! I see stars, I block ‘em out! Those buggers tend to spawn in groups of 3 or 4. I wasn’t going to survive another attack, I had to seal myself off fast. Those green buggers are NOT going to take me out after I’ve traveled THIS FAR to find these damn trees! I get the entrance blocked up and I start hearing spiders, zombies and skeletons all at once. Good grief…
I take a quick assessment of my surroundings. All but 4 of my wolfies are dead, they are all on their last legs for health and I have no pork to heal up any of us. My cave is no longer “my” cave… it’s now a gigantic creeper hole (They leave a recognizable blast crater when they go off, these I have dubbed “creeper holes”). So I do what any sensible minded Minecrafter would do: I create a small shrine to the memory of my 9 lost wolfies, complete with flowers as grave markers.
So the morning comes (I can tell because I hear zombies and skeletons frying quietly in the morning sunlight and the compassionate, caring side of me quietly mutters “Burn you little f... burn!”). I tear down my blocked entrance and peek my head outside. I quickly realize my mistake as I notice I’m in the shadow of a tall tree and spiders are still aggressive during the day if they are in the shadows of the trees. I slap the attack button and tag the spider mid-leap, which sends my remaining wolfies into action. I scamper quickly back down into the cave, and they leap out to attack the spider… 2 more wolves die… This has NOT been a good day for the fuzzy ones…
So I have two wolves left, almost no hearts and a minimal scrap of white left on my armor bar. But by God I’ve found my Pine! I spend the next two Minecraft days harvesting the trees. I make sure to re-plant a few so I don’t completely rape the landscape of them for good. In the process I lose another wolf because he happened to jump left when he should have jumped right and fell off a hillside to his death. I face-palmed… I happen upon a few pigs and get me some pork chops and heal up. By the time I decide I’m done, I have 3 lovely stacks of 64 Pine to take home with me to work with.
I see no point in building this far away from the rest of our works, so I begin to try and sort out how to get back home. I tap F3 to get some idea of where I am in relation to where I need to be and I find I’m at X:7300-something… Holy CRAP! Just how far did I travel!? I have a compass, so I decided to get it pointing straight up (It always points to the original spawn point for the game world) and got myself to sea level. My plan is to build a direct route, at sea level, to the spawn point. Regardless of what stands in my way or blocks my path, I will create a straight line that leads me right to home and back again. If there is something in my way, I’m tunneling straight through it. A 1 x 2 passageway that will be lit as I go. So far I’ve gone through about 9 Iron Picks and at least half a diamond pick, 3 or 4 iron shovels and part of an iron lumber axe.
I’m not home yet…
