Here's an old GIF image from 2001- a group of neutrals and Clansmen fighting giant snakes in Anarchy Online.
I think we were around level 15 or so (out of a max level at the time of 200). This was the early days of the game when lots of grouping happened. This took place during the first 6 months of the game, after the very rocky launch. People would just go out and hunt creatures all over the landscape in a group instead of doing solo or group instanced missions all the time. I remember this particular area well- it was between the neutral city of Borealis and the Strat West Bank area, a rocky place of low hills and the occasional boulder or scattered trees. The nice thing about this spot was that if we pulled too many snakes that were too hard for us, we could run for the shimmering bubbling blue zone line- we'd cross through but the snakes wouldn't. So you'd have a chance at surviving a terrible pull *laughs*
I believe that is me in the background as an Adventurer dual-wielding pistols and casting a heal spell. The others in the foreground are probably an Enforcer (dual blades) and possibly an Engineer and/or Doctor (single pistol wielders) or even a Fixer with a small submachinegun. A zapping ray coming from offscreen means that someone with some kind of an energy weapon or nano spell was in the group too, possibly a Nanomage, Bureaucrat or even a Soldier. As you can see, trench coats were popular fashion then- they could be found as drops off of human mobs, or were offered as loot in missions. They were an early appearance item which, much like a cloak, could be draped over your body armor. Matching armor sets took some work to put together, either as individual pieces dropped as loot or as mission rewards. Different types of armor required different stat levels to wear. AO was unique in that you had the ability to raise your stats (strength, agility, stamina, intelligence, sense, psychic) as part of your training points you got when you leveled. It has a great hybrid level/skill system that I geeked out over. Should I put points into computer literacy or ranged dodging? I'm certainly maxxing out my pistol skill...
I liked my Adventurer. The class was a jack-of-all-trades, doing decent damage, heals, and buffs. They could also polymorph into animal forms. I've been a hybrid class fan ever since.
