I don't know that I've ever been privvy to an exit in an MMORPG that was roleplayed. Most often a character simply disappears, as the player tells everyone (and as in the article, it's usually 1 day before the end of the subscription) that he/she's just quitting.
Sometimes the folks come back, and that's joyous.
The other thing I rarely experience (and admit that I don't really miss) is "scripted" roleplay in MMORPGs. Rarely is there an overarching plot in groups I play with. Simply day to day trauma is enough. I dislike plotted roleplay, to be honest, and it is probably me who drifts away from that sort of thing.
I have killed off several characters in roleplay, but that was in text-based chat room roleplay on AOL (ah, the good old days of the RDI). In all instances, the character did die, and never did return (although of course I played other characters). And usually the death of the character does allow for interesting new story arcs to arise from it.
With the ephemeral population of games today, and the severe lack of what I would call roleplay, I don't see too many ploys for the loss of a character happening. I guess that's sad as well.

Aye, true enough. The RP you run across now is mostly within guilds. DAoC's golden days (with its server-wide community) may have been the high point of graphical game roleplay.
