Unfortunately, Darkfall and Mortal Online are 2 fantasy sandboxes that have little to do except FFA PvP. UO had far more to do and attracted many types of players rather than just free-for-all PvPers which is a focus that many MMO players avoid (hence Mordred's relative lack of popularity in DAoC, and relatively small populations in FFA PvP games). UO had many systems and subgames for various types of players to enjoy. Dawntide is an independent game trying to recreate that experience. It's got a way to go, but they're giving it a try! For some of the tension in open sandbox design in regards to PvP mechanics, see this thread: Mortal Online vs Dawntide (Dawntide forums)Example: "Balance of PvE with the PvP: This really is crucial, MO seems to be falling into the Darkfall trap of focusing too much on the PvP this will have the effect of driving away the PvE and RP community and that is disastrous for a sandbox immersive world in my book."

I just spent 5 hours crawling around a dark dungeon. Smashing critters, running through axes swinging from the ceiling, dashing over falling floor tiles, collecting BIG axes, trying to open trapped chests, and smashing barrels for coins and health potions. I'm at level 2, and there are 91 levels in this game someone built... in Second Life. Sandbox gameworlds are the way to go!
